Performing Basic Engine Setting Checks

Requirements

- Engine coolant temperature 85°C (815°F) minimum

- All electrical consumers switched OFF

- A/C switched OFF

Procedure

- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool, Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

- Drive vehicle for minimum of 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not include any stops (if possible)

- Activate DTC Memory

^ Do not shut engine off after activating DTC Memory

- Let engine idle

- Display will appear as shown:

Select function XX

- Press HELP button to print procedure for inputting the display group number

- Press 0 and 4 buttons to select function 04 "Activate basic setting"

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input

- Display will appear as shown:

Display group number XX

- Press Q button two times to select "System in basic setting"

- Press Q button to enter input

NOTES:

The displayed values for channels 1 to 10 are in decimal form.

After approximately 2 seconds compare the channel displays with the Specification Chart. Basic Engine Setting Specification Charts

- After test drive and activating DTC Memory, compare the display in channel 9 with the specified values within 5 minutes

^ If the vehicle idles longer than 5 minutes, the specified value can be exceeded without a malfunction being present

^ The display in channel 10 shows the ignition angle calculated by the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J 220). With a loss of power, you should check the basic mechanical settings of the engine.

^ With printer connected, the most recent display will be printed

^ Each time the PRINT button is pressed the display will be printed

If the specified values are obtained in all channels

- Press the "Arrow" button

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select function 06 "End output"

- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input

- Display will appear as shown:
