Transmission Mode Switch: Testing and Inspection

DTC 00299 Program switch

- Switch program switch to M.

- Take rotary knob off program switch.

- Start engine.

Mode Selector:





- If program switch shaft moves to position E, control signal to program switch is OK.

- Check rotary knob for ease of movement.

- Check control signal to returning magnets in (E 122), using wiring diagram if program switch shaft does not move.

- Do this only during starting procedure.

If program switch shaft moves, but a fault is displayed.

- Connect test box VAG 1598 to transmission control module. Refer to Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool.

- Switch on ignition.

- Connect DVOM to direct 20 VDC first between sockets 1 and 10 and then between 1 and 29 on VAG 1598.

- Select all programs in turn using program switch.

- Must be 10-12 volts in program position M at sockets 1 and 10.

- Must be 10-12 volts in program position E at sockets 1 and 29.
- Must be 2-3 volt in program position S at sockets 1 and 10 and 1 and 29.

If not:

- Remove center console.

- Remove connector from program switch and check wire routing between E 122 and J 217 and between E 122 and welding ground point 99 and between E 122 and J 60, using wiring diagram.

- Replace program switch if no open circuit is found.
