System Function Check W/ VAG 1710

ABS, CHECKING FUNCTION WITH VAG 1710

Note
From 1993 m.y. the ABS switch (E 83) is deleted on all models.

^ drive vehicle onto hoist platform and raise far enough until all wheels can be turned freely

Note

^ transmission in neutral (N)

^ differential lock not engaged on All Wheel Drive (AWD) models

^ parking brake not applied

^ switch off ignition

^ remove plug connection to ABS Control Module (J 104)

^ set coding switch A at connector cable VAG 1710/1 to correct setting of vehicle being tested

^ plug connector cable VAG 1710/1 to vehicle ABS Control Module (J 104) harness and ABS tester VAG 1710

Note
The ABS Warning Light (K 47) lights up in test steps 1 to 4 and 6 when the ignition is switched on. If the LED on the ABS tester (LED -1-) goes out during the ABS test, test power supply to ABS Control Module (J 104)

CAUTION

^ DO NOT drive vehicle with testers connected
^ DO NOT test the brake system on a brake dynamometer

Models With FRONT Wheel Drive

Models With ALL Wheel Drive

Note

^ rotor with 96 teeth
^ removing and installing - see Repair Manual

PLUG-TYPE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FOR ABS (ROUND POLE SENSOR)

Note

^ rotor with 45 teeth
^ removing and installing - see Repair Manual

ABS ACCELERATION SWITCH (F 113)

Note

^ installed on Audi models with AWD (All Wheel Drive) from Model Year 1987

^ removing and installing - see Repair Manual

^ arrow a points in direction of travel

TEST STEP 1

Subject of test:

^ power supply to ABS Control Module (J 104)

^ ABS Combination Relay (J 156)

^ Rear Differential Lock Switch (F 100), Front Differential Lock Switch (F 101) (on models with AWD)

^ ABS Switch (E 83)*

Subject of test:

^ Ground (GND) connection to ABS Control Module (J 104)

^ diode for ABS Warning Light (K 47).

^ solenoid valve in ABS Hydraulic Unit (N 55) (resistance)

Note
If one of the LEDs (from -1-to -4.4-) illuminates weakly, this indicates contact resistance; test relevant plug connections and wiring on basis of wiring diagram.

TEST STEP 2

Subject of test:

^ Terminal 61 (D+) to ABS Control Module (J 1O4)*

^ Brake Light Switch (F)

Note

^ on models up to I 984 m.y. the Brake Light Switch (F) is not connected to ABS Control Module (J 104)

TEST STEP 3

Subject of test:

^ relay for ABS Return Flow Pump Relay (J 105).

^ ABS Return Flow Pump ("39) and related Ground (GND) connection

TEST STEP 4

Subject of test:

^ ABS Acceleration Switch (F 113) for vehicles with AWD

^ Power supply for ABS Control Module (J 104), pin 16 vehicles with FWD and ABS with EDL

Note
This test step applies to:

^ AWD vehicles from 1987 m.y.

^ vehicles with FWD and ABS with EDL

Note

^ the arrow on the ABS Acceleration Switch (F 113) points in direction of travel.

^ LED -2- does not light up

TEST STEP 5

Note
Assistance of a second mechanic required.

Subject of test:

^ ABS Solenoid Valve Relay (J 106)

^ operation of solenoid valves and correct connection of related electrical and hydraulic connections.

Note
The 4 wheels are selected individually using the wheel selector switch 4.

Pos. 5 = Left Front ABS Solenoid Valve (N 59).
Pos. 6 = Right Front ABS Solenoid Valve (N 58).
Pos. 7 = Left Rear ABS Solenoid Valve (N 57) (with FWD).
= Rear ABS Solenoid Valve (N 77) (with AWD).
Pos. 8 = Right Rear ABS Solenoid Valve (N 56) (with FWD).

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 6 and perform test on front right wheel from test step 5.3.

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 7 and perform test on rear left wheel from test step 5.3 (with FWD) or on both wheels of rear axle (with AWD)

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 8 (only with FWD) and perform test on rear right wheel from test step 5.3.

TEST STEP 6

Subject of test:

^ operation and correct connection of wheel speed sensor

Note

^ do not read pointer instrument -1- until the LED -2- shows a steady light without flickering

^ the dial of the instrument -1- consists of 8 units

^ the LED -2- goes out if wheel speed is excessive

^ the wheel speed sensors are selected individually with the wheel selector switch -4-

Pos. 5 = Left Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 47)
Pos. 6 = Right Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 45)
Pos. 7 = Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 46)
Pos. 8 = Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 44)

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 6 and perform test of Right Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 45) - on front right wheel from test step 6.3

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 7 and perform test of Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 46) on rear left wheel from test step 6.3

^ wheel selector switch -4- in position 8 and perform test of Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G 44) on rear right wheel from test step 6.3

^ switch off ignition

^ detach plug connector to ABS tester VAG 1710

^ connect ABS Control Module (J 104) and install

^ perform test drive

Note

^ the ABS Warning Light (K 47) must go out when engine is running (only on models without ABS OBD)

^ drive vehicle at a speed of at least 30 km/h for more than 20 seconds. The ABS Warning Light (K 47) must not light up during this time
