Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)


COMPONENTS ACTIVATED
^ Fuel Pump (FP) relay - J17
^ Idle Air Control (IAC) valve - N71
^ Intake Manifold change-over valve - N156
^ EVAP canister purge regulator valve - N80
If equiped:
^ Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator valve - N18
^ Secondary Air Injection (AIR) solenoid valve - N112
^ Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay - J299

NOTES:
The Output Diagnostic Test (DTM) can only be carried out with the ignition switched ON and the engine NOT running.
The Output DTM will be interrupted if engine is started or if a speed pulse is detected.
During Output DTM, the individual components are activated until the "ARROW" button is used to switch to the next component or the Output DTM is ended.
The components are checked by listening for sounds of activation, and/or by touching.
If the output DTM is to be repeated without running the engine, switch OFF the ignition for approx. 20 seconds.

REQUIREMENTS:
^ The ignition switched ON and the engine NOT running.

PROCEDURE
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool, refer to Connecting and Operating VAG Scan Tool. Connection and Use of Test Equipment
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics and continue switching until display appears as shown:

- Press buttons 0 and 3 to select function 03 "Output Diagnostic Test Mode".
- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input.
- Display will appear as shown:

Fuel Pump relay - J17


^ Fuel pump relay must activate audibly (click)
^ Fuel pump must audibly run
^ Streaming noise of fuel flowing through fuel pressure regulator must be audible

NOTE: The fuel pump relay will run until the end of the output DTM.

If the relay does not operate:
- Check the fuel pump relay activation.

If the relay operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

Idle stabilizer valve - N71


The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is operated (clicks) until the next DTM component is selected by pressing the "Arrow" button.

If valve does not operate (does not click):
- Check the IAC valve.

If valve operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

Intake Manifold Changeover Valve -N156


The intake manifold change-over valve is operated (clicks) until the next DTM component is selected by pressing the "Arrow" button.

If valve does not operate (does not click):
- Check the intake manifold change-over valve.

If valve operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

EVAP Canister Purge Regulator Valve -N 80


The EVAP canister purge regulator valve is operated (clicks) until the next DTM component is selected by pressing the "Arrow" button.

If valve does not operate (does not click):
- Check the EVAP canister purge regulator valve.

If valve operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.

VEHICLES WITH EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM ONLY
- Display will appear as shown:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve -N18


The EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve is operated (clicks) until the next DTM component is selected or ends the test by pressing the "Arrow" button.

If valve does not operate (does not click):
- Check the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve.

If valve operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.

VEHICLES WITH SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM ONLY
- Display will appear as shown:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Inject. Solenoid Valve -N112


The secondary air injection solenoid valve is operated (clicks) until the next DTM component is selected by pressing the "Arrow" button.

If valve does not operate (does not click):
- Check the secondary air injection solenoid valve.

If valve operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay -J299


The secondary air injection pump relay operates (clicks) until the test is ended by pressing the "Arrow" button (up to a maximum of 10 seconds).

If secondary air injection pump motor does NOT run:
- Check the secondary air injection pump relay and motor.

If motor operates:
- Press the "Arrow" button.
- Display will appear as shown:

NOTE: To repeat the DTM function 03, Switch ignition OFF for approximately 20 seconds before reselecting output Diagnostic Test Mode.
