Ground Connection Modification Procedure
Vehicles With A 4-Spoke Steering Wheel

CAUTION:
Always disconnect the battery ground (GND) cable before working on air bag or other related systems.

A. Check Ground Connection

^ Record preset radio stations

^ Obtain radio code

^ Check system with the VAG 1551

^ DISCONNECT BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND COVER THE BATTERY TERMINAL

^ Use T30 torx wrench and remove torx screws (1), located at the rear of the steering wheel

^ Remove air bag unit from the steering wheel by tilting it down; disconnect the electrical connection and store air bag properly

WARNING:
Always set a removed air bag unit down (e.g., on a workbench) with the horn pad facing upward.

^ Check for ground connection:

a) If a Phillips-head screw is in position (A) on horn-plate circuit board, no further action is necessary

^ Reinstall parts, torque torx screws to 10 +/- 2 Nm (7 ft-lbs), and PROCEED TO SECTION C

b) If a Phillips-head screw is NOT present in position (A), proceed to install a ground wire as outlined in Section B

B. Install Ground Wire

^ Remove cover (5) by inserting small screwdriver in slot (B) and releasing tab, then tilt cover down to release lower tab

^ Install ground wire (3), part number 4D0 419 149, using Phillips-head screw (4) located in steering wheel at right, lower corner of horn.plate opening. The wire connector crimping must be upwards and visible to the technician

^ Remove horn-plate screws (2), left side of steering wheel only

^ Lift horn plate slightly; ensure that the washers and springs remain in position and slide ground-wire tab end (3) beneath the horn plate to torx-screw location

^ Apply loctite to threads of both horn-plate screws (2); insert screws and torque to 5 +/- 0.5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

^ Reinstall cover plate (5); ensure that it "snaps" properly into position at the top and bottom

^ Reconnect air bag electrical connection, then reinstall air bag unit

^ Install air bag-mounting screws (1) by hand; first tighten right torx screw, then the left. Torque 10 +/- 2 Nm (7 ft-lbs)

^ Proceed to Section C

Ground Connection Modification Procedure
Vehicles With A 3-Spoke Steering Wheel

CAUTION:
Always disconnect the battery ground (GND) cable before working on air bag or other related systems.

A. Check Ground Connection

^ Record preset radio stations

^ Obtain radio code

^ Check for ground connection:

a) If a TORX SCREW is in position (A) on horn-plate circuit board, no further action is necessary

^ Reinstall parts, torque torx screws to 10 +/- 2 Nm (7 ft-lbs) and PROCEED TO SECTION C

b) If position (A) contains a RIVET, proceed to install a ground wire as outlined in Section B

B. Install Ground Wire

^ Use T25 torx wrench to remove screw (2), including rubber washer and grommet, and discard

^ Install ground wire (3) from kit, part number 4A1 498 091, using new screw (4) and knurled bushing (5) also from the ground wire kit

- Position the wire connector (with crimping downwards) in a 10-o'clock position and torque screw 7 +/- 1.5 Nm (62 in-lbs)

^ Guide the ground wire underneath the horn plate to the torx-screw location

^ Insert torx screw (1) from below steering wheel through wire connector and horn plate

^ Reconnect air bag electrical connector, then reinstall air bag unit

^ First tighten right torx screw, then the left.
Torque 10 +/- 2 Nm (7 ft-lbs)

^ Proceed to Section C

C. Functional Check

^ Reconnect battery ground cable

CAUTION:
Ensure that no person is in vehicle when connecting battery ground cable

^ Turn ignition switch to ON position and check air bag warning light. Light should go out after 4 seconds - system is OK
