Electrical/Electronic Components, Overview

1. Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-.
^ Location: left front footwell above pedal support
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic: Refer to VAG Scan Tool (ST), Connecting and Selecting Function

2. Engine Control Module (ECM).
^ Location: passenger-side footwell behind glovebox

NOTE: If the TCM or ECM is replaced, the system must be returned to basic settings using the VAG 1551 or VAG 1552 scan tool and the "Basic Setting" function 04.

3. Data Link Connector (DLC).
^ Location: auxiliary relay station 1, left side of plenum

4 Valve body
^ Location: inside transmission ATF pan.
^ Solenoid valves -N88-, -N89-, -N90-, -N91-, -N92-, -N93- and -N94- attached
^ Transmission fluid temperature sensor -G93- integrated with conductor strip (to solenoid valves)
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

5. Multifunction Transmission Range (TR) switch -F125-
^ Location: on transmission, right-rear
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

6. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68-
^ Location: on transmission, right-rear
^ Dirt can cause malfunctions; clean if necessary
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

7. Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G38-
^ Location: above cover/differential gears
^ Dirt can cause malfunctions; clean if necessary
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

8. Gear selector lever
^ Location: center console

9. Shift lock solenoid -N110-
^ Location: front of gear selector mechanism
^ Checking => Read Measuring Value Block (function 08), and/or Electrical test

10. Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G69-
^ Location: integrated with throttle valve control module -J338-
^ Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
^ Signal is transmitted from TP sensor to TCM via ECM, and can only be checked using scan tool Read Measuring Value Block (function 08)
^ If a TP sensor malfunction is recognized, always also check On Board Diagnostic for ECM
^ After repairs, initiate "Basic Setting"

11. Cruise control switch -E45-
^ Location: steering column
^ Checking => Read Measuring Value Block (function 08)

12. Park/Neutral Position (PNP) relay -J226-
^ Location: on relay panel

13. Transmission Range (TR) selector lever display -Y6-
^ Location: instrument cluster
^ No display indicates operating in mechanical "back-up" mode (TCM in-active)
^ Display with all ranges illuminated indicates operating in "back-up" mode (electrical, TCM active)

14. Kick down switch -F8-
^ Location: behind engine compartment bulkhead in plenum, integrated with accelerator pedal cable
^ To replace switch, replace accelerator pedal cable and adjust
^ Checking => Read Measuring Value Block (function 08), or Electrical testing

15. Brake light switch -F-
^ Location: pedal cluster
^ Checking => Read Measuring Value Block (function 08), or Electrical testing
