Differential Oil Level, Maintenance Requirements

All Audi Models and Model Years Equipped with 3-Speed Automatic Transmissions

Condition

Some of the gear oil with which the differential was filled during manufacture could be lost over time due to evaporation. Evaporation lowers the gear oil level in the differential, as shown in the illustrations.

If the gear oil reaches a critically low level, lubrication could become insufficient and cause premature gear and bearing wear. This condition becomes noticeable as a "grinding noise" coming from the drivetrain while driving the car.

If the "grinding noise" is ignored, the differential gears and bearings could fail and in extreme circumstances could cause the drive wheels to become locked. This will result in substantial repair expenses and can also impair the safe operation of the car.

Service

In order to ensure the long term reliability and satisfactory performance of the automatic transaxle assembly, the differential oil level must be checked and replenished at every 15,000 mile / 24,000 Km maintenance interval. Use only differential oil, part number G 052 145 A1 or A2 available from your VWoA parts depot for the replenishing.

In the interest of customer safety and satisfaction, it is imperative that service technicians perform, without fail, the differential oil level check when performing 15,000 mile / 24,000 Km interval services.
