With VAG Scan Tool, Address Word 01
DISPLAYING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE MEMORY USING ADDRESS WORD 01Address Word 01 functions are only accessable with the VAG 1551 Scan Tool or the VAG 1552 Scan Tool. Diagnosis with a Generic Scan Tool is possible using the diagnostic modes of Address Word 33. The VAG 1551 and 1552 Scan Tools can also access Address Word 33 diagnostic modes. TEST REQUIREMENTS
Electronic Box With Circuit Breakers:
- Fuse 17 and engine electronics circuit breakers 1, 2, 3 and 4 (holder colors black, brown, red and yellow) in the electronic box in passenger floor OK.
- Fuel pump relay OK.
PROCEDURE
- Ensure Test Requirements are met.
Data Link Connector Cover:
- Remove Data Link Connector (DLC) cover located in front tray of center console.
Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool:
- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Modes: 1 - Rapid data transfer and 2 - Blink code output appear alternately.
- Display appears as shown:

2 - Blink code output
- If display is not shown, check voltage supply to DLC.
Note:
^ Press the HELP button for additional operating instructions.
^ Press the "Arrow" button to advance through the program sequence.
VAG 1551 FUNCTION NOTES
^ Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory reading/erasing (Address Word 01, functions 02 and 05): Perform with engine running. If engine will not start, crank engine for a minimum of 5 seconds, do not switch OFF ignition after cranking.
^ Additional functions of Address Word 01 are covered in: Diagnosis With Scan Tool, Address Word 01.
- If a printout of the DTC's is wanted: press PRINT button to switch printer on (LED in button must light up). The VAG 1552 Scan Tool does not have a printer.
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" mode.
- Display appears as shown:

Insert address word XX
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to select "Engine Electronics" Address Word 01.
- Display appears as shown:

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Display appears as shown:

Scan Tool sends Address Word 01
If display appears as shown:

Control module does not answer
- Press the HELP button to print list of possible causes.
Note: Check DLC wiring.
- After eliminating possible cause, re-enter "Engine Electronics" Address Word 01, then press -Q- button to confirm input.
If the display appears as shown:
Rapid data transfer
Error in communication link
- Disconnect data link connector wire from other vehicle systems having OBD (rapid data transfer) capabilities.
If either of the following displays appears:
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire not switching to Ground
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire not switching to B+
- Press the HELP button to print list of possible causes.
Notes:
^ Check DLC wiring.
^ Disconnect DLC wire from other vehicle systems having OBD (rapid data transfer) capabilities.
- After eliminating possible cause, re-enter "Engine Electronics" Address Word 01, then press -Q- button to confirm input.

^ ECM identification: 8A0 906 266D, for actual ECM Part No. see latest parts catalog microfiche
^ Engine displacement: 2.8 liter

^ Number of valves per cylinder: 2 valves
^ Fuel injection system: Multiport fuel injection
^ ECM software version: (OBD II, ECM EPROM status)
^ ECM hardware and software version: (D02, ECM program status)
^ Coding: 01002
^ WSC _____ (Dealer number)
Note: If the correct ECM identification corresponding to the vehicle is not displayed, replace the ECM.
- Press "Arrow" button.
- Display appears as shown:

Select function XX
Note: Press the HELP button for additional operating instructions.
- Input the function number 02, for DTC memory.
- Press "Arrow" button to input the selection.
- Press "Q" button to confirm the function selected.
- Display will appear as shown:
X DTC recognized
OR
No DTC recognized
- Indicating the number of stored malfunctions or "No DTC recognized" will be displayed.
NOTES:
^ If the printer on the VAG 1551 is turned ON the DTC's will be displayed and printed out one after the other.
^ If the printer is OFF or the VAG 1552 is being used, press the "Arrow" button the display the next DTC.
- Repair any malfunctions as necessary using the DTC Charts. Testing and Inspection
