Basic Setting Overview

BASIC SETTING FUNCTION
^ The engine management system uses a learning function to set certain parameters which by design eliminates the possibility of mechanical adjustment. The current engine basic setting (the current learned values) will be erased if the Engine Control Module (ECM) and/or battery are disconnected.
^ After selecting "Basic Setting" function 04, the engine may have a rough idle for a short period as the system "learns" the new values, When this occurs, let the engine idle for a few minutes until the learning process is completed and the engine resumes running smoothly.
^ Basic Setting Display groups 000 through 039 are identical to display groups 000 through 039 described in "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08

DISPLAY GROUP GUIDELINES
^ Display groups 000 to 010 are used for general troubleshooting.
^ Display groups 011 to 019 are used for troubleshooting when driving performance problems exist.
^ Display groups 020 to 039 are used to evaluate exhaust gas related components and/or systems.
^ Oxygen Sensor (O2S) control can be switched ON or OFF using display group 99.

READINESS CODE
^ In display group 023, the OBD II ECM displays the "Readiness Code," which is erased when battery positive voltage (B+) to the ECM has been interrupted or when the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory has been erased. In order to reset the "Readiness Code" a "mixed city and highway" drive at 80-100km/h (50-62 mph) for approx. 1-1/2 to 5 minutes in 4th or 5th gear must be completed.

POWER INTERRUPTION
^ All learned values stored in the ECM are erased if battery positive voltage (B+) to the ECM is interrupted (eg. if the ECM connector is disconnected or if the battery is disconnected). This may cause a brief uneven idle after engine start-up. In this case, let the engine idle for a few minutes until the learning process is completed.

INITIATION
^ When "Basic Setting" function 04 is initiated using the VAG 1551 scan tool, all learning requirement displays (Display groups 007 and/or 008) are set to zero, to allow the new Oxygen Sensor (O2S) learned values to be stored after vehicle repair Learning does not occur if a validated DTC (MIL on) relating to O2S control is stored in DTC memory. If the malfunction is sporadic, learning will still occur.
When "Basic Setting" is initiated, the ECM establishes the following conditions:
^ Ignition timing is set to a constant 12
^ Idle Air Control (IAC) idle stabilization is blocked
^ The EVAP canister purge regulator valve is set to the closed position (switched OFF)
^ A/C is switched OFF
^ The EGR valve is set to the closed position (switched OFF)
^ Dynamic Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) signal is ignored and a constant value of 80°C (176°F) is used by the ECM
^ Relearning of the O2S learning values occurs

NOTE: By pressing buttons - 1- and -3- on the VAG 1551 scan tool, the "Basic Setting" function 04 and "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08 can be switched back and forth.
