Performing Basic Setting Checks
PERFORMING BASIC SETTING USING ADDRESS WORD 01Address Word 01 functions are only accessable with the VAG 1551 Scan Tool or the VAG 1552 Scan Tool. Diagnosis with a Generic Scan Tool is possible using the diagnostic modes of Address Word 33. The VAG Scan Tools are also capable of accessing the Address Word 33 diagnostic modes.
TEST REQUIREMENTS
- Engine coolant temperature 85°C (185°F) minimum
- Accelerator Pedal not pushed down
- All electrical consumers switched OFF
- A/C switched OFF; press fan speed "minus" button in A/C control head repeatedly until all displays are erased
- Automatic transmission selector lever in P or N position
- No malfunctions stored in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory
PROCEDURE
- Ensure Test Requirements are met.
Data Link Connector Cover:
- Remove Data Link Connector (DLC) cover located in front tray of center console.
Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool:
- Connect Scan Tool VAG Scan Tool using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC). Refer to Diagnosis with Address Word 01 for proper connection and operation of the VAG Scan Tool. Diagnosis with Address Word 01
- Start engine and let idle.
^ Be sure that vehicle meets requirements.
- Drive vehicle for a minimum 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not have any stops (if possible). Leave engine running.
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

- Select function code.
Diagnostic Trouble Code Memory 02
- Display will appear as shown:

02 - Check DTC Memory
- Check DTC memory for stored codes.
If malfunctions are stored in DTC memory:
- Repair the malfunction(s).
- Erase DTC memory.
- Stop engine (switch ignition OFF) and start again.
- Drive vehicle for a minimum 5 minutes, choosing a route that does not have any stops (if possible). Leave engine running.
- Check DTC memory again.
If No malfunctions are stored in DTC memory:
- Let engine idle.
- Advance through program until display appears as shown:

Input display group number XXX
- Select the desired display group by inputing the 3 digit display group number. Refer to the Display Group Overview Charts for a description of the data displayed for each Display Group, Display Group Overview Charts
Example: Display group 000.
- Press 0 button three times to select basic setting display group 000.
- Press Q button to enter input
- Display will appear as shown:

NOTES:
The display groups are identical to those described under "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
The scan tool does not display zeros in display group numbers.
The displayed values for display group 000, channels 1 to 10 are in decimal form. Refer to the display group overview chart for display group 000 for conversion to actual values.
If the printer is switched ON, the current display will be printed out (VAG 1551 only).
Actual engine values are displayed in this block of ten display fields. If the engine is OK, the actual data must correspond to the specified display values.
Idle mixture is adjusted automatically in engine basic setting by O2S control adaptive learning.
- Compare the displayed values to the values in the Display Group Diagnostic Charts for the coresponding display groups.
- Press the "C" button before selecting another display group.
If the specified values are obtained in all channels:
- Press the "Arrow" button
- Display will appear as shown:
