Check Control Module Versions
CHECKING CONTROL MODULE VERSION AND CODING USING ADDRESS WORD 01Address Word 01 functions are only accessable with the VAG 1551 Scan Tool or the VAG 1552 Scan Tool. Diagnosis with a Generic Scan Tool is possible using the diagnostic modes of Address Word 33. The VAG Scan Tools are also capable of accessing the Address Word 33 diagnostic modes.
TEST REQUIREMENTS
Electronic Box With Circuit Breakers:
- Fuse 17 and engine electronics circuit breakers 1, 2, 3 and 4 (holder colors black, brown, red and yellow) in the electronic box in passenger floor OK.
- Fuel pump relay OK.
PROCEDURE
- Ensure Test Requirements are met.
Data Link Connector Cover:
- Remove Data Link Connector (DLC) cover located in front tray of center console.
Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool:
- Connect Scan Tool VAG Scan Tool using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC). Refer to Diagnosis with Address Word 01 for proper connection and operation of the VAG Scan Tool. Diagnosis with Address Word 01
- Advance through Scan Tool program until display appears as shown:

Select function XX
- Select function code.
^ Check Control Module Version, Function 01
- Display will appear as shown:

- Press Q button to enter input.
The engine control module identification number is indicated via the display, for example: 8A0 906 266 D. Display will appear as follows:
8A0906266D 2.8L V6/2V MFI OBD 2 D02
Coding 01002 WSC 06388
- Display breakdown is as follows:
^ ECM identification: 8A0 906 266 D (example)
^ Engine displacement: 2.8 liters
^ Engine type: V-engine, 6 cylinder
^ Number of valves per cylinder: 2 valves
^ Fuel injection system: MFI multiport fuel injection
^ ECM hardware and software version: D02
^ ECM coding: e.g. 01002
^ Current code number for the factory or service facility that was used to carry out the last coding and/or adaptation with the VAG scan tool: WSC 06388
- Check for correct ECM coding, must be 01002 for OBD II ECM. If coding is incorrect replace the ECM.
NOTE: Only during idle speed do correct specifications regarding the engine control module number and related coding occur.
