Shift Linkage: Service and Repair






COMPONENT NOTES AND INFORMATION

NOTE:
^ The following work must be carried out before disassembling the gear selector mechanism:
- When working on the selector lever block, shift lock solenoid or locking cable, the center console must be removed, refer to Body and Frame.
- If the locking cable is replaced, the steering wheel and the instrument cluster must be removed in addition to the center console, refer to Suspension and Steering.

- Must not be kinked
- Remove center console, steering wheel and instrument cluster to service locking cable
- Removing and installing, refer to Starting and Charging
- Adjusting, refer to, refer to Starting and Charging
4 Clip
- Attaching, refer to, refer to Starting and Charging
- Adjusting, refer to, refer to Starting and Charging
5 Bolt
- Tighten to: 9 Nm (80 inch lb)
6 Transmission Range (TR) program switch
7 Selector lever handle
8 Screw
- Tighten to: 9 Nm (80 inch lb)
9 Washer
10 Selector lever housing
- Install with "P" facing direction of travel
- Adjusting, refer to Fig. 2, below.
- Install after adjusting shift lock solenoid
- Unscrew locking cable at selector lever housing before removing housing
11 Selector lever
- With clevis for locking selector lever in "P", and "N" positions, as well as detent for unlocking ignition key by means of locking cable with selector lever in "P" position
- Check clearance between selector lever and shift lock solenoid, refer to Fig. 1, below.
12 Guide pin
- Tighten to: 22 Nm (16 ft lb)
- Install after inserting compression spring -15-
13 Bushing
- For torsion spring
14 Torsion spring
15 Compression spring
- Place into selector lever before installing guide pin -12-
16 Bushing
- Lubricate with suitable grease after installing
17 Circlip
- Install after inserting selector mechanism lever-21-
18 Washer
19 Selector mechanism housing
20 Bushing
- Lubricate with suitable grease after installing
21 Selector mechanism lever
22 Nut
- Tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
23 Washer
24 Cup
25 Bushing Insert into selector mechanism lever -21 -
26 Cup
27 Washer
28 Clamping sleeve
29 Clamping pin
30 Spring clip
31 Boot
- Replace if damaged
- Ensure correct installation
32 Selector lever cable with guide and bushing
- Tighten selector lever cable to brackets
- Tighten to: 12 Nm (9 ft lb)
- Check that guide tube is correctly seated
- Do not bend or kink cable
- Lubricate contact surfaces for selector lever -38- and washer -39- with suitable grease before installing
- Adjusting selector lever cable. Adjustments
33 Grommet
- Replace if damaged
- Ensure correct installation
34 Bolt
- Tighten to: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
35 Washer
36 Boot

CAUTION:
^ The boot for the selector lever cable must be correctly installed otherwise moisture may get into the selector lever cable.
^ Check the boot for damage, and replace the selector lever cable if necessary

37 Mounting bracket
- For selector lever cable
- At transmission
38 Transmission selector lever
- Lubricate contact surface for selector lever cable with suitable grease
39 Washer
- Shoulder faces cable
- Grease shoulder with suitable grease
40 Nut
- Tighten to: 9 Nm (80 inch lb)
41 Nut with washer
- Tighten to: 9 Nm (80 inch lb)
42 Shift lock solenoid
- Press solenoid with detent in axial direction against selector mechanism housing and tighten solenoid mounting screws
- After installing selector mechanism, switch ignition on.
Solenoid blocks selector lever in "P" position and "N."
If brake pedal is depressed, selector lever can be moved out of ups position or "N."
- Check clearance between selector lever and solenoid, refer to Fig. 1, below.

44 Screw
- Tighten to: 9 Nm (80 inch lb)

PROCEDURES

- Selector lever is in "R" position:
Clearance must be 0.6-1.4 mm (0.024-0.055 inch)
- Measure as shown with feeler gauge -A-.
- The clearance can be adjusted by moving the solenoid in the mounting holes.

NOTE:
^ After installing the shift lock solenoid, position the clevis hole so that it is centered relative to the solenoid, and energize the solenoid.
^ Install the selector lever housing in this position so that the selector lever is in "N" position relative to the housing.
^ The selector lever must be equally distant from "N" to OR" and from "N" to "D."
