Housing, Input Shaft Bearing, Multi-Function Switch: Overview

Basic disassembly and assembly, refer to "Sequence Of Operations" at Transmission Housing.

1. Transmission housing with differential and flanged shafts
- Clamp transmission in assembly stand.
- Refer to "Removing and installing differential, flanged shafts, bearings and seals".
- Refer to "Replacing multi-function switch and drive gear for speedometer".
- Note insertion depth of breather: refer to "Procedures"
- Removing bushing for 3rd and 4th gear shift rod: refer to "Procedures"
- Knock in bushing with drift VW 295 and adapter tool VW 295a
- Sealing transmission housing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
Needle bearing for input shaft.
- Removing: refer to "Procedures"
- Installing with extractor 40-202
- Insertion depth: refer to "Procedures"
Double tapered roller bearing outer race
2. Self-locking Torx bolt
- Always replace
- 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
3. Guide sleeve with seal
- Removing and installing guide sleeve and seal: refer to Clutch release mechanism, Service And Repair
4. Belleville spring washer
- Small diameter facing guide sleeve (curved side)
5. Circlip
- Removing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
- Installing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
6. Ball bearing for input shaft
- Removing from transmission housing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
- Installing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
7. Circlip
- Removing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
8. Input shaft
- Removing and installing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
9. Bolt
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
10. Locking plate
- For multi-function switch
11. Multi-function switch
- Removing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
- Installing: refer to "Sequence of Operations" at Controls and Housing
12. Harness connector for multi-function switch
13. Torx bolt
- 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
14. Cover for shift lever shaft
- Remove, if necessary, with universal tool VW 771 and internal extractor, e.g. Kukko 21/3, 18.5-23.5 mm
- Tightening torque for mounting bolts: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
15. Catch for 5th and reverse gear
- May also be replaced when transmission installed
- Tightening torque for mounting bolts: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
- Position chamfered side of plastic bushing facing relay shaft bore
- Disassembling and assembling: refer to "Procedures"
- Final installed position: refer to "Procedures"
