Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

Transmission Installed
- Detach drive axle from drive flange.
- Place oil drain pan in position.






- Place chisel or spacer -A- behind drive flange.
- Pull drive flange shaft out of differential gears by turning bolt -B-.






Note: Always replace the drive flange shaft circlip. Clamp the shaft in a vise using protective jaws, and press the old circlip out of the groove by using a new circlip -A-.

- Pull out oil seal with extractor lever VW 681.






- Drive in right-side oil seal using VW 195 until seal is 5.5 mm (0.217 in.) below surface of transmission housing.






- Drive in left-side oil seal until seal is 5.5 mm (0.217 in.) below surface of cover.
- Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
- Drive in drive flange shaft using drift VW 295.
- Install drive axle.

Tightening torques
^ M8 = 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
^ M10 = 80 Nm (59 ft lb)

- Top up transmission oil.
