Steering column switches, removing and installing (steering wheel with air-bag)
Warning
Always disconnect the battery when working on the electrical system DO NOT connect battery while working on the vehicle.
- Obtain radio code from customer.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
Warning
Disconnecting the battery ground cable alone will not prevent accidental airbag release. Always disconnect the airbag voltage supply connector before working on any airbag or steering component.
^ Airbag connector is located above the carpeting covering electronic control module, on the passenger side.
- Remove torx screws (T30) from back side of steering wheel.
- Remove airbag from steering wheel.
- Disconnect connector from airbag.
- Place airbag aside with airbag facing up.
- Verify that front wheels are centered straight ahead then remove steering wheel.
- Disconnect horn contact connector -10- and airbag spiral spring -12-.
- Remove screw -1- and screws -2- from lower steering column switch trim.
- Carefully remove upper steering column switch trim -3-.
- Loosen Allen bolt for clamp -4-.
- Loosen Allen screw -9-, then remove adjusting lever trim -8-.
- Remove clip from telescoping lever, then remove lever.
- Remove screw -6- and 2 screws -7- then remove lower steering column cover -5-.
- Carefully pull up steering column switches approximately 1/2 in. (13 mm) from steering column.
- Separate all plug connectors for steering column switches, then remove switches.
Modification harness, installation.
- Remove lower left instrument panel trim.
- Remove left heat duct.
- Remove under hood auxiliary relay panel cover (auxiliary relay panel -1- is located in left side of the plenum, near the cowl).
- Insert yellow relay socket into auxiliary relay panel 1, location number 4, then install relay -D-.
- Route replacement wiring harness on the production wiring harness along the steering column to the light switch connector.
Note
When routing the modification harness, allow enough length to ensure height/telescoping adjustment and turning of the steering wheel are smooth and not binding. Also, fasten the modification harness to the production wiring harness with tie-wraps.
- Release connector -C- by sliding the violet tab on the back side of the connector to the first detent (see Fig. -A-).
Note
When violet tab is in first detent, make sure wires do not fall out of connector cavities.
Fig. A:
- Remove black/yellow wire from cavity 3.
- Remove white/black wire from cavity 9.
- Remove yellow wire from cavity 8.
- Remove red/brown wire from cavity 11.
- Install the three wires (double strand) from the replacement harness into the open cavities of the connector as follows:
- Insert double black/yellow wire in cavity 3.
- Insert double white/black wire in cavity 9.
- Insert double yellow wire in cavity 8.
- Cavity 11 remains open.
- Secure wires into connector by sliding violet tab to closed position.
Fig. A:
Note
Refer to Fig. -A- for correct positioning of wiring.
- Connect the 4 wires of the vehicle wiring harness into the 2-pin and 3-pin hard shells included with retrofit kit as follows:
- Insert black/yellow wire in cavity 3 of the 3-pin connector.
- Insert red/brown wire in cavity 1 of the 3-pin connector.
- Insert yellow wire in cavity 1 of the 2-pin connector.
- Insert white/black wire in cavity 2 of the 2-pin connector.
- Install foam tubes (included with the retrofit kit) over connectors -A- and -B-.
- Connect modification harness to vehicle wiring harness, pull foam tubes over connectors, then wrap all four wires with electrical tape.
- Gently pull wiring behind instrument panel and route along steering column.
- Check and assure that newly installed modification harness does not interfere with telescoping/tilt steering.
- Reassemble appropriate parts in reverse order of removal.
- Reconnect battery.
- Enter radio code and set clock.
Note
^ The gap between steering wheel and steering column switch trim must be approximately 7/16 in (11 mm).
^ Front wheels must be pointed straight ahead and turn signal switch in the off position before installing steering wheel.
