This Technical Bulletin contains all information needed for repair. Troubleshooting procedures are also included.

Remote Operated Central locking, repairing

Vehicle can be locked and unlocked without using mechanical vehicle key.

To open, press transmitter UNLOCK button for approximately 1 second. Open doors/or luggage compartment lid within approximately 30 seconds after radio signal is sent, otherwise vehicle will lock again automatically.

To lock, press transmitter LOCK button for approximately one (1) second.

Note:
^ Ignition on deactivates remote control function.
^ Depending on environmental conditions, the range is 3 to 5 meters (10 to 15 feet).
^ Remote control can be interrupted temporarily because of interference from other microwave signals in area.
^ When LOCKING/UNLOCKING, turn signals are activated (flash).

Central Locking System, components:
^ Control module - radio control -1-, under the rear seat bench.
^ Wiring harness -2- with separate antenna -3-. Insulated part of antenna cable 1-2 meters (3.3 -6.4 in.) is fastened to wiring harness with cable ties. Non-insulated part of antenna approximately. 20 cm (7.8 in.) is fastened with two adhesive strips to the left wheel house.
^ As many as four transmitters are possible for radio-remote operation.

Control Module (J276),
removing/installing

- Remove rear seat bench and seat back.
- Loosen radio control module mounting bolts.
- Disconnect wiring harness connector at control module.
- Assembly in reverse sequence.

Functional test

Notes:
^ Perform test at a distance of 5 meters (15) from right front fender.
^ If possible, perform test outside to make best use of unfavorable conditions.

Basic function:

- Lock/unlock vehicle by pressing lock/unlock buttons.
- Check door and trunk lid status each time.
- Pressing LOCK button causes turn signals to flash once and when pressing UNLOCK button, turn signals flash twice.

Safety function:

- Open locked vehicle by pressing UNLOCK button.
- Wait 30 seconds
- Verify that all doors and trunk lid lock again automatically.

Remote Deactivation, checking

- Switch ignition on.
- Attempt to Lock and unlock vehicle by pressing LOCK/UNLOCK button.
- Transmitter must be deactivated and not function after ignition has been switched on.

Note:
The function check is OK if basic function, locking function, and lock/latch function works with all transmitters.

Transmitter Battery, changing

- Remove phillips screw from transmitter housing.
- Separate transmitter housing halves carefully.
- Replace discharged batteries with lithium batteries of same type and voltage, ensure correct polarity.
- Reassemble housing.

Transmitter, coding

Note:
Original, transmitter coding was performed at the rear lock. Beginning with model year 1996 coding will be done at the driver's door.

^ If a transmitter is being replaced the new one must be coded.
^ Up to four transmitters can be coded for each system.
^ If a new transmitter is being coded, the existing transmitters must also be coded.
^ In addition to transmitters, two vehicle keys are also needed for coding.

- Switch on ignition.
- Using second key, slowly lock vehicle at driver's side door lock, smoothly without jerking key in tumbler.
- Activate both transmitter buttons for at least 4 seconds.

^ The system should now be functional.

- Lock vehicle again at driver's side door lock, turn key slowly and smoothly in tumbler.

- Activate both buttons of second transmitter for at least 4 seconds.

^ When coding is completed, central locking is functional.

Note:
Repeat procedure with remaining transmitter if requested. After switching ignition off, radio-operated remote control is ready for use.

System troubleshooting

Note:
Antenna is directly connected to the control module, if the antenna becomes inoperative, control module for remote -J276 must be replaced.

If remote control system becomes inoperative, troubleshoot using the following steps:

- Check system using all transmitters. The system is OK if the base, lock, and lock deactivation all work with all transmitters.

- One Transmitter does not function:
- Replace battery in inoperative transmitter
- Complete function test

If transmitter does not function continue with next step:

- Replace inoperative transmitter with a new one.
- Code all transmitters

Multiple transmitters are inoperative:

- Replace battery of inoperative transmitters. Perform function test. If system does not function continue with next step:

- Replace inoperative transmitters with new ones.
- Code all transmitters. If system does not function continue with next step:
- Replace remote control module J276
- Code all transmitters. Perform function test. If system does not function continue with next step:
- Check wiring harness using current wiring diagram.
- If necessary, replace wiring harness. Perform function test
