Exhaust System /Aligning without tension
Exhaust system, aligning without tensionAlign the exhaust system as follows to prevent noise due to incorrect tension:
Notes:
^ Loosen all threaded connections (except exhaust manifold) including front exhaust pipe/transmission brackets.
^ The dimensions given on the illustrations are approximate figures for reference.
^ Align exhaust system cold.
^ Adhere exactly to the sequence of operations which follows.
- Align left front exhaust pipe with TWC -A- and right front exhaust pipe with TWC -B-.
^ Dimension -a- between flange connection and cross brace -C- = approx. 60 mm
^ Distance between front TWO and transmission must be at least 7 mm (0.28 in.)
Exhaust Flange Tightening Sequence:
- Tighten nuts on front exhaust pipe flange connections to left and right exhaust manifold
^ tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
Caution!
Tighten the two front exhaust pipes uniformly and in the sequence shown.
Note:
The flanges of the front exhaust pipes are shown from below. The -arrow- points toward the front of the vehicle.
- Adjust initial tension of exhaust system on front holding strap on center muffler
Exhaust Hanger Clearance:
- Correct dimension -a- to 7-9 mm by pushing part in double clamp. -Arrow- points toward front of vehicle.
- Bend securing straps on brackets over approx. 900 after holding loops are installed.
^ Dimension -b- between holding loop and securing straps must be at least 2 mm (0.078 in.) on both brackets
Exhaust Pipe Clearance:
- Align end pipes as shown in illustration.
^ Distance -a- right = distance -a- left
Note:
If repairing or replacing, the rear muffler must be aligned on the left rear muffler bracket.
Exhaust Hanger Clearance:
- Correct initial tension by sliding part in short double clamp between center muffler and rear muffler. -Arrow- points toward center of vehicle.
^ dimension -a- = 12- 14 mm (0.47 -0.55 in.)
Exhaust Clamp Clearance:
^ Installation position of double clamp between center muffler and rear muffler, dimension -a- = approx. 350
^ Double clamp must be centered between ends of pipes
Notes:
^ Double clamp shown is seen from below toward front of vehicle.
^ Tighten nuts uniformly, 40 Nm (30 ft lb).
Exhaust Clamp Clearance:
- Align and tighten double clamp between intermediate pipe and center muffler.
^ Dimension -a- = 30°
^ Dimension -b- = 25 - 30 mm (1 - 1.2 in.)
Notes:
^ Double clamp shown is seen from below toward front of vehicle.
^ Tighten nuts uniformly, 40 Nm (30 ft lb).
- Tighten front exhaust pipe brackets free of tension.
Exhaust system, checking for leaks
- Start engine
- Close end pipes for duration of leak testing using rags, plugs etc.
- Check connection points, e.g. cylinder head/manifold, manifold/front exhaust pipe, etc., for leaks by listening.
- Repair all leaks found.
