Checking Engine Speed Signal

Note:
Only perform the following check if there is no tachometer reading.
- Connect VAG 1598 Test Box, using VAG 1598/5 adapter cable, to ECM. Refer to VAG 1598 Pin Out Box Connecting Connecting and Testing VAG 1598 Pin Out Box
- Connect VW 1367 engine tester or equivalent, to perform RPM measurement. Connect as per manufacturer's instructions.
- Using VW 1594 connector test kit, connect signal wire (green terminal) to Test Box terminal 30.
- Run engine at idle.
^ RPM must be displayed on VW 1367

If YES:
- Switch OFF engine and remove instrument cluster.

Engine Control Module Harness Connector:

- Check continuity between ECM terminal 40 (terminal 40 on Test Box), and instrument cluster, using wiring diagram.

If wiring is OK:
- Repair malfunction in instrument cluster.

If RPM is NOT displayed on VW 1367:
- Check for short circuit to positive or GND between ECM terminal 40 (terminal 40 on Test Box), and instrument cluster, using wiring diagram.
