Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table Automatic climate control

The table lists all of the possible malfunctions and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) recognized by the A/C control head -E87-, and displayed and/or printed on the VAG 1551 sCan Tool.

Malfunctions stored in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory are retained until erased.

If faulty components are indicated, check wiring and connections (terminals 75, 30, and 31) for open or short circuits according to wiring diagram before replacing the components.

After replacing a faulty component, carry out basic setting and check DTC memory.

Use VAG 1598 testbox and VAG 1598/11 and 1598/12 adapter cables for checking electrical connections to the A/C control head -E87-.

Sporadic malfunctions are identified with an SP on the right side of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool display.

The five-digit DTC is not displayed on the VAG 1551 Scan Tool, but only printed out via the printer.

If the A/C control head -E87- stays ON after the ignition is switched OFF, check the wiring from the A/C control head connector D, terminal 1 tor a short circuit to battery positive voltage (B+) according to the wiring diagram.

Notes:
Zexel A/C compressors have been installed from the start of production. During m.y. 1996, a new Nippondenso A/C compressor is installed as a running change on all vehicies with 6-cylinder engines.

The A/C control head -E87- must be coded for the specific vehicle application, including the type of A/C compressor installed (Zexel or Nippondenso).

Vehicles equipped with a Nippondenso compressor must have an A/C control head -E87- identified with index letter "K" or higher to allow for correct coding.

For correct part number and application of replacement A/C control head -E87-, see latest parts catalog.

On the Nippondenso compressor, the A/C compressor speed sensor -G111- has been eliminated. If this is not taken into consideration when coding the A/C control head -E87-, the A/C compressor will run only briefly and then be switched off again immediately, since no A/C compressor speed signal is received.

If a malfunction for A/C clutch -N25- is recognized on a vehicle with a Zexel compressor (with A/C compressor speed sensor -G111-), first check the wiring between the A/C control head -E87- and the sensor -G111-.
