Air Bag Systems: Description and Operation

The air bag system is designed to supplement protection offered by seat belts in a frontal impact collision. The system features an airbag control module with expanded On Board Diagnostic capability, an optimized passenger side airbag, and a pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner system.

The Airbag system is equipped with On Board Diagnostic capability.System components are monitored electrically, and any malfunctions in operation can be detected. These malfunctions are then stored in the airbag control module memory, which can differentiate between different types of malfunctions. After system diagnosis and servicing, the airbag control module DTC memory can be erased.

The airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) in the instrument cluster will come on when a malfunction is detected. A sporadic malfunction will also register.

If the airbag has been deployed, the system will indicate whether the deployment was correct (crash data), and which malfunction occurred at the time of deployment.

NOTE: CRASH DATA CANNOT BE ERASED.
