Connecting and Operating VAG 1551 Scan Tool
Test Conditions:- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK
- B+ power supply and fuses for each system OK
- Selector lever in "P" position
- Parking brake applied
- Transmission Ground (GND) connections OK
- Check Ground connections for corrosion or poor contact, and repair if necessary:
^ Ground connection near intake manifold on engine
^ Battery Ground strap
^ Ground connection between Battery and transmission.
- Switch ignition off.
Connecting:
- Open rear ashtray -1- in center console, and remove ashtray insert -2-.
- Connect VAGl55l scan tool with VAG1551/3 adapter to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) in console.
NOTE: If there is no display, check the voltage supply (B+) to the DLC => wiring diagrams.
Indicated on display: (Operating modes 1 and 2 are displayed alternately)

NOTES:
^ Press the "HELP" button for additional information.
^ Press the -> button to advance through the OBD program.
^ Press the "PRINT" button to switch on the scan tool printer (indicator light in button comes on).
Selecting :
- Switch ignition on.
- Depress brake pedal once.
- Switch printer on by pressing "PRINT" button (indicator lamp in button comes on).
- Press -1- button to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

Insert address word XX
NOTES:
^ To operate the On Board Diagnostic program in the "generic scan tool" mode, insert address word 33 and press the -Q- button to confirm. Generic OBD functions. With Generic Scan Tool
^ To initiate an automatic test sequence (a check of DTC memory for all systems with OBD capability), insert address word 00 and press the -Q- button to confirm.

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Transmission Electronics" address word 02.

Example:
^ 01N 927 733 AD: TCM Part No. (example, verify correct application using parts catalog microfiche)
^ AG4 Gearbox 01N: 4-speed automatic transmission 01N
^ 2033: EPROM (program level)
^ Coding 00000: not required at present
^ WSC 00000: Dealership no. for scan tool with which TCM was last checked
- Press -> button.

If "Control module does not answer" appears in the display:

Control module does not answer!
- Press "HELP" button to list possible malfunction causes.
- Check DLC connections according to wiring diagram, and check supply voltage from TCM => test step 1. Test Steps, 1 to 3
- Check transmission control module => DTC 65535, "Control Module Malfunctioning". DTC 65535
If one of the following messages is displayed:
Rapid data transfer HELP
L wire not switching to Ground
or:
Rapid data transfer HELP
L wire not switching to B+
or:
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire not switching to Ground
or:
Rapid data transfer HELP
K wire not switching to B+
- Press "HELP" button to list possible malfunction causes.
After Repairing Malfunction:
- Once again insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

^ After any particular program function has been completed, the VAG1551 scan tool will display "Select function XX."
