Upper Track Control Arms

NOTE: For additional information, refer to suspension component locations. Locations

REMOVAL





1. Remove wheel trim.
- On light alloy wheels, use special tool -3208- to remove cap.
2. Remove wheel





3. Remove clip -1- with pliers.

NOTE: The clip serves to hold the mounting bracket to the body during production and does not need to be replaced.

4. Loosen nut -2-, remove hex bolt and pull both control arms upward and out.

CAUTION: The slots in the swing arm must NOT be widened.





NOTE: The steering gear boot needs protection from damage when the mounting bracket is removed. (The illustration shows steering gear isolated for better clairity.
a. Use Protective sleeve part No. 893 512 137, or equivalent.
b. Cut strip of width -A- 20 to 25 mm from protective sleeve and smooth down edges.
c. Slide protective sleeve over steering gear boot with newly cut slit facing downward.

5. Pull ABS wheel speed sensor cable out of bracket at brake caliper.





6. Remove hex bolt -1- joining suspension strut to support link.
7. Tilt swing arm over to one side





8. Unscrew hex bolts -1- in plenum chamber.
9. Take out suspension strut together with mounting bracket.

CAUTION:
^ The slots in the swing arm must not be widened.
^ When removing the suspension strut, ensure that the joint boot is not damaged.





10. Clamp suspension strut in vice (using protective jaws).
11. Unbolt both arms (arrows).
12. Remove nuts -1- and take off mounting bracket.

INSTALLATION





1. Position components as shown in the illustration.
F Direction of travel
L Mounting bracket on left-hand side
R Mounting bracket on right-hand side
- Holes in spring retainer (small arrows) of suspension strut -1- must face toward middle of car.
2. Tighten hex nuts -2- to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).





3. Align upper arm.
- Dimension -A- = 47 ± 2 mm (1.85 ± 0.08 inch).
4. Tighten hex bolts -1- for both arms, tighten to: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). plus an additional 1/4-turn (90°)





5. Install suspension strut with mounting bracket into suspension strut tower. Tighten hex bolts -1- to: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: Make sure the washers are correctly positioned.





6. Insert clevis of the suspension strut into support link. Tighten nut-1- to: 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
7. Install both upper track control arms. Tighten nut -2- to: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: Track control arm joint with collar pushed onto swing arm as far as the stop.

8. Insert ABS wheel speed sensor cable into bracket at brake caliper.
9. Install wheel.
