Seal and Grooved Ball Bearing For Flange & Driveshaft Replacing
Notes:
- This procedure can be done with the rear differential installed.
- The rear crossmember must not be loosened.
Removing
- Remove exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust Systems.
- Remove heat shield over driveshaft.
- Mark position of flange -A- relative to rear final drive -B- in color, if not already marked.
- Place oil drain pan below differential.
- Drain transmission fluid.
- Loosen mounting bolts on driveshaft at rear differential.
- Tie driveshaft to mounting on parking brake cable.
- Remove mounting bolts to driveshaft.
- Support differential with VAG 1383A or equivalent.
- Remove mounting bolts -arrows- of front cross member on rear differential.
- Lower differential slightly.
- Remove mounting bolts of torque tube (extension housing) to rear axle housing (4 bolts).
- Remove flange shaft including torque tube with VW771 and VW 771/15.
- Replace seal and grooved ball bearing.
Installing
Install in reverse order.
Tightening Torques
Front crossmember to body M8 23 Nm (117 ft lb)
Front crossmember to body M1 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
Front transmission support to differential 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
Torque tube to rear axle housing M10 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
Driveshaft to differential M8 55 Nm (41 ft lb)
