- Remove poly-ribbed belt. Refer to Drive Belt Service and Repair. Drive Belt
- Unclip timing belt guards on both sides.
- Turn engine by hand to TDC position.
- Check positions of the camshafts.
^ Large bores of locating plates on both camshaft sprockets must point in towards each other. If not, turn crankshaft one more revolution to TDC again.
- Remove Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from crankcase at left side.
^ TDC notch in the crankshaft must be located behind bore of removed CKP sensor, visually seen or felt.
- Screw crankshaft holder 3242 or equivalent into bore of removed CKP sensor and tighten slightly.
- Remove poly-ribbed belt tensioner.
- Remove left and right timing belt guards.
- Remove the vibration damper.
^ Center bolt does not have to be loosened for removal of damper.
- Remove bottom timing belt guard, then mark running direction of timing belt to aid in reassembly, if reusing belt.
- Install camshaft holder, tool # 3243 or equivalent.
Note: Camshaft holder # 3243 sets the cams in time with each other. There are no reference marks on the camshaft sprocket because the sprockets are taper fit to the cams and do not use a keyway or pin for location.
- Loosen bolts of left and right camshaft sprockets approx. 3 turns.
^ Do NOT remove bolts completely.
- Remove camshaft holder.
- Loosen camshaft sprockets from tapered ends of camshaft using appropriate puller.
^ Use KUKKO 21-10 or equivalent if engine is removed.
^ Use puller 3032 or equivalent if engine is installed.
- Loosen camshaft belt tensioner.
- Remove camshaft belt.
