General Information






1. Transmission Control Module
- Location: In front of the right front seat under a cover in the footwell.
- Removing, installing and disconnecting multi-pin connector, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Is tested by On Board Diagnostic, refer to Powertrain Management.
2. Engine Control Module
- Location: in left of plenum chamber
- Removing and installing, refer to Powertrain Management.
3. Data Link Connector (DLC)
- Location:
Up to 1996, below cover in rear ashtray (center console)
From 1997, below L/H side of instrument Panel
- Connecting Scan Tool VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) and selecting functions, refer to Powertrain Management.
4. Valve body
- Location: below transmission oil pan,
- Removing and installing valve body, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- The Solenoid Valves are attached to the valve body
- Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor is integrated in the wiring harness in the transmission, removing and installing valve body, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Components are tested by On Board Diagnostic
5. Multi-Function Transmission Range (TR) Switch
- Location: on left of transmission,
- Replacing Multi-Function TR Switch, refer to Powertrain Management
- Is tested by On Board Diagnostic, refer to Powertrain Management
6. Transmission Input Speed sensor
- Location: in valve body,
- Replacing Transmission Input Speed Sensor, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Is tested by On Board Diagnostic, refer to Powertrain Management
7. Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor
- Location: rear right in transmission
- Replacing Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor, refer to Powertrain Management.
- Is tested by On Board Diagnostic, refer to Powertrain Management
- Measures transmission output speed
8. Selector lever mechanism
- Location: in front center console
9. Shift Lock Solenoid
- Location: on right-hand side of selector mechanism
- Removing and installing, refer to Replacement.
- Can be tested in Measured Value Block, refer to Powertrain Management
10. Throttle Position (TP) Sensor
- Location: integrated in Throttle Valve Control Module
- Is tested by On Board Diagnostic, refer to Powertrain Management
- Signal is transmitted from the throttle position sensor via the engine control module to the transmission control module.
Signal can be tested only in the Measured Value Block, refer to Powertrain Management
If the throttle position sensor is displayed in the On Board Diagnostic as a malfunction, always conduct On Board Diagnostic of the engine control module as well, refer to Powertrain Management
11. Cruise Control Switch
- Location: integrated in steering column switch
- Can be checked in the Electrical test, refer to Powertrain Management.
12. Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Relay
- Location: relay plate
13. Transmission Range Selector Lever Display
- Location: in instrument cluster
If gear display goes out, this indicates emergency mode with nonactive transmission control module.
If gear display is completely illuminated, this indicates emergency mode with active transmission control module.
14. Kick Down Switch
- Location: behind bulkhead in plenum chamber, integrated in throttle cable
- To replace the kick down switch, replace the throttle cable and then adjust
- Can be tested in Measuring Value Block, refer to Powertrain Management
15. Brake Light Switch
- Location: in pedal assembly
- Removing and installing, refer to Lighting and Horns
- Can be tested in Measuring Value Block, refer to Powertrain Management.
