Shift Linkage: Testing and Inspection

WARNING: Move selector lever into position "P" and apply the parking brake before any work done with the engine running.

SELECTOR MECHANISM, CHECKING
Selector Lever In Position "P" And Ignition Switched On:
_ Brake pedal is not depressed:
The selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position "P". The shift lock solenoid blocks the selector lever.
- Brake pedal is depressed:
The shift lock solenoid releases the selector lever. It is now possible to engage a drive position. Slowly shift the selector lever from "P" through "R. N. D, 4, 3, 2". When shifting, check whether the selector lever position indicated in the instrument cluster agrees with the actual position of the selector lever.

Selector Lever In Position "N" And Ignition Switched On:
- Brake pedal is not depressed:
The selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of position "N". The shift lock solenoid blocks the selector lever.
- Brake pedal is depressed:
The shift lock solenoid releases the selector lever. It is now possible to engage a drive position.

NOTE:
^ It must not be possible to operate the starter when the selector lever is in position 2, 3, 4, D and R.
^ At speeds in excess of 5 km/in (3 mph) and when the selector lever is shifted into position "N", the shift lock solenoid must not engage end block the selector lever. The selector lever can be shifted into a drive position.
^ At speeds below 2 km/in (practically stationary) and when the selector lever is shifted into position "N" the shift lock solenoid must engage after a delay of about 1 second. The selector lever cannot be shifted out of the "N" position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
