Programming and Relearning
If the ABS or ABS/EDL system is also equipped with a traction control system (TCS or ASR), the ABS control module must be coded for either manual transmission or automatic transmission.NOTE:
^ Coding can only be carried out if a dealership number has been stored in the VAG 1551 scan tool. Refer to VAG 1551 documentation and operating instructions.
^ A 3-digit code must always be displayed during the control module identification.
^ If the code that is displayed does not match the vehicle, or if the control module has been replaced, the control module must be coded.
Coding Procedure:
- Connect scan tool No. VAG 1551 with diagnostic cable VAG 1551-3, or equivalents, refer to Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool. Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool

- Press button 1 for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.

- Press buttons 0 and 3 to insert "Brake Electronics" address word 03.

If one of the following displays appear there is a malfunction in the communication link between the ABS control module and the VAG 1551 scan tool.
- Press HELP button to print out a list of possible causes.
Control module does not answer
OR
K wire not switching to ground HELP
OR
K wire not switching to B+ HELP
OR
No signal from control module
OR
Error in communication link
- Check wiring, power supply and ground connections for DLC.
- After correcting possible malfunctions, once again insert "Brake Electronics" address word 03 and press Q button to confirm input.
If there is no malfunction when establishing communication between the VAG 1551 scan tool and ABS control module, the control module identification appears in the display.
The control module coding is indicated only in the case of vehicles with traction control (TCS or ASR).
The workshop code, WSC XXXXX, indicates the dealership number of the service department in which the control module was last coded.

^ Manual transmission: Code 000. Specified state: No voltage at ABS control module -J104- terminal 45 (terminal 45 not assigned)
^ Automatic transmission: Code 001. Specified state: Voltage present at ABS control module -J104- terminal 45 (connected to transmission control module -J217-)
NOTE: Always check for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) prior to entering code.
- Press Q button to confirm input.
The control module identification and the coding entered (e.g. 00XXX) appears in the display.
