Servicing Front Final Drive
Oil Seals For Flanged Shaft, Replacing
Transmission Installed
- Detach drive axle; remove heat shields for CV joints beforehand, if necessary.
- Place oil pan in position.
- Place chisel or spacer -A- behind flanged shaft.
- Pull flanged shaft out of differential bevel gears by turning bolt -B-.
Note: Always replace the circlip for the flanged shaft. Clamp the shaft in a vice using protective jaws and press the circlip out of the groove by using a new circlip -A-.
- Pull out seals with the extractor lever VW 681.
- Drive in right-hand oil seal with VW 195 to 5.5 mm (0.217 in.) below surface of transmission housing.
- Drive in left-side oil seal with VW 195 to 5.5 mm (0.217 in.) below surface of cover.
- Pack space between dust lip and sealing lip with multi-purpose grease.
- Drive in flanged shaft with drift VW 295.
- Install drive axle.
Tightening Torques
M8: 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
M10: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
- Top up transmission oil.
