Electrically Adjustable Steering Column Switch, Replacing




Removing:
- Obtain radio anti-theft code, then disconnect battery ground strap.
- Turn steering wheel to center position (wheels must be in straight ahead position).
- Position steering column all the way down.


WARNING!
- Airbag system components must only be checked, removed, installed, or repaired by qualified Service Department personnel.
- Before starting to work on any part of the airbag system, disconnect the battery ground (GND) strap. When reconnecting the ground strap. the passenger compartment must not be occupied.
- Always refer to airbag system safety precautions.







- Using Torx T30 bit -1-, remove screws from airbag unit from left and right sides of back of steering wheel: 7 Nm (62 in. lb)
.
- Carefully remove airbag unit, disconnect electrical connector and place unit down with pad facing up.







- Remove both screws -8- and remove upper steering column switch cover -1-.
- Disconnect electrical connector of wiring to spiral spring.
- Remove nut -12- and steering wheel -11-.
Tightening torque: 50 Nm (36 ft lb)


CAUTION!
When removing steering wheel, do not turn spiral spring from center position.



- Remove three screws -5- and -6- as well as Torx screw (T25) -9- and then remove lower steering column switch cover.
- Disconnect electrical connector for electrical steering column adjustment.







- Remove both screws -1- and remove switch -2- from steering column switch cover.

Installing:







- First attach steering column switch -2- to steering column with inside hex screw -3- to provide gap of -a = 3 mm (1/8 in.) between switch and steering wheel -1-.
- Remove steering wheel again and continue installation in reverse order of removal.
