Cylinder Block Assembly: Service and Repair

NOTE: Always replace gaskets and seals.

1 Main bearing cap bolts
- Always replace
- Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) plus 1/2 turn (180°)
2 Main bearing cap
- Always replace bolts
- Identification marking "1" faces oil pump
- Checking bearing clearance, refer to Bearing Clearance. Testing and Inspection
3 Connecting rod bearing cap bolts
- Always replace
- Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) plus 1/2 turn (180°).
- Measuring radial clearance: tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.), but DO NOT tighten further
4 Connecting rod bearing shells
- Never interchange used connecting rod bearing shells
- Checking connecting rods and bearings, refer to Bearing Clearance. Testing and Inspection
5 Piston rings
- Checking, refer to Checking Clearance. Testing and Inspection
6 Piston
- Checking, refer to Procedure. Testing and Inspection
7 Crankshaft
- Checking, refer to Procedures. Testing and Inspection
- Dimensions, refer to Journal Diameters. Specifications
8 Oil pump
- Check drive gear on crankshaft when installing
- Removing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
9 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
10 Thrust washers
- Installed only at 4th crankshaft main bearing
- Checking crankshaft axial clearance, refer to Procedures. Testing and Inspection
11 Bolt
- Always replace
- Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) plus 1/4 turn (90°)

CAUTION: Bolts are different from those used to mount the flywheel for a manual transmission vehicle.

12 Driveplate
- Adjusting Engine Speed (RPM) sensor, refer to Powertrain Management.
- Removing and installing driveplate, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
13 Main bearing shells
- Checking radial clearance, refer to Procedures. Testing and Inspection
14 Seal
- Replacing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Never apply grease to seal
15 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
16 Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
- Thread bolts and hand-tighten before tightening crankshaft main bearing caps
