Toe
CAUTION: Toe should be set by adjusting both tie rods, and only using optical measuring equipment and special tool 3279.PREPARATION
- Pry off cover from intake air silencer.
- Remove both intake air silencer mounting screws.
- Disconnect intake air duct from mass air flow sensor.
- Disconnect crankcase ventilation hoses from cylinder head covers.
- Push intake air silencer to rear and lift upward.
- Disconnect vacuum hose from throttle body and remove intake air silencer.
ADJUSTING
- Set front wheels in straight-ahead position.
- Attach special tool 3279 with hole (a in illustration)over left mounting nut on tie rod carrier and tighten with knurled nut (c in illustration) on chain.
- Turn steering wheel as necessary to place hole (b in illustration) of special tool 3279 over head of rear bolt on steering gear cover (with help from second technician).
- Check steering wheel position (spokes horizontal).
- If necessary remove steering wheel and straighten.
NOTE: Special tool 3279 is shown mounted on a steering gear that has been removed.
- Divide total toe specification in half, and adjust left and right tie rods to meet this specification.
- Secure tie rod.
- Remove special tool 3279.
- Road test.
- Steering wheel spokes must be horizontal when driving straight ahead.
NOTE: If the steering wheel is slightly misaligned, it can be corrected by slight compensating adjustment to both tie rods.
Example:
If the steering wheel is slightly misaligned to the right:
- Lengthen right tie rod slightly.
- Shorten left tie rod by same amount.
- If necessary check toe again
