Guide Bearing (Bushing) Replacement, Axle Installed

ALL VEHICLES
- Install brake pedal support.





- Disconnect brake lines from brackets on both sides.
- Plug brake line connections using rubber caps from brake caliper bleeder screws.

VEHICLES WITH BRAKE PROPORTIONING VALVE





- Disconnect brake proportioning valve from bearing mounting bracket.
- Remove regulator spring mounting bolt from lever on brake proportioning valve.
- Carefully press brake proportioning valve slightly toward center of vehicle.
- Remove axle mounting bolts on both sides of bearing mount.
- Press axle downward so special tool 3294 can be installed.

ALL VEHICLES





- Install assembly device 3294 as shown.
- Press guide bearing out of rear axle by turning tool spindle.
- Remove assembly device 3294.





- Align new guide bearing in rear axle so that:
- Axes (B and C in illustration) are parallel to each other
- Bearing is oriented toward direction of travel (arrow at C in illustration)





- Press guide bearing into rear axle with assembly device.





- Press in bearing until pin (a in illustration) makes contact with metal bearing housing (arrow in illustration).
- Lightly coat entire surface of projecting rubber parts of guide bearing with silicone grease, Part No. G 000 405 A2.





- Carefully raise rear axle using VAG1383A transmission jack and loosely install both mounting bolts in bearing mounts.
- "a" in illustration = Wooden support
- Install brake proportioning valve on bearing mount.
- Connect brake hoses to bracket on both sides.
- Install regulator spring for brake proportioning valve in lever and fasten loosely with hex bolt.
- Remove brake pedal support.
- Bleed brakes.

ADJUSTING
- Vehicle at curb weight; i.e. fuel tank completely full, with spare tire, vehicle tool kit and jack in specified positions
- Brake hydraulic system filled and bled to specifications
- Vehicle on platform-type lift or over inspection pit (vehicle must be standing on wheels)





- Loosen nut (1 in illustration (already loose)).
- Install adjustment device 3284 in holes (arrows at 2 in illustration) in brake proportioning valve.





- Tighten nut (1 in illustration) to 20 Nm (15 ft lb).
- Remove adjustment device.
- Tighten mounting bolts for rear axle bearing mount on both sides with vehicle standing on its wheels.
Tighten to: 80 Nm (59 ft lb) plus 1/4-turn (90°)
