Final Drive Input Gears

INPUT GEAR, ADJUSTING

CAUTION: After the input gear has been adjusted, the outer tapered roller bearing inner race must be removed and then installed using AMV 185 100 01 A1 locking compound, refer to Final Drive Input Gear replacement. Service and Repair.

- Install outer races of both tapered roller bearings using locking compound AMV 185100 01 A1, refer to Final Drive Input Gear replacement. Service and Repair





- Install input gear without dished washer and without shim and tighten socket-head fastener to 100 Nm (74 ft lb).

Parking lock engaged
- Remove socket-head fastener.
- Insert dial indicator and zero gauge with 3 mm preload.





- Measure distance between input gear (B in illustration) and tapered roller bearing inner race (A in illustration).
- Note difference in gauge reading (example: 1.00 mm).
- Thickness of dished washer (1.50 mm) must be added to reading.

Example:
Dished Washer + Reading = Measurement
1.50 mm + 1.00 mm = 2.50 mm

Determining Shim Thickness
The specified bearing preload is achieved when 0.18 mm is subtracted from the figure obtained from the measurement (dished washer + reading).

Example:
Dial indicator measurement (e.g. 1.00 mm) + dished washer thickness - Bearing preload = Required shim thickness
1.00 mm + 2.50 mm - 0.18 mm = 2.32 mm

- Remove socket-head fastener.
- Select shim from table shown below and place shim on end of input gear.
- Install fastener with dished washer (curved side faces fastener).
Tighten to: 250 Nm (184 ft lb)

CHECKING TURNING TORQUE





A In illustration = Torque gauge 0-600 Ncm (0-50 inch lbs)
B In illustration = Socket 41 mm
- Lubricate bearings beforehand with ATF.
- The turning torque of new input gear tapered roller bearings must be 165-245 Ncm (15-22 inch lbs) greater than that measured at the pinion without the input gear.

Example:
Pinion with differential (average) + Input gear = Total turning torque
210 Ncm (23 inch lbs) + 205 Ncm (19 inch lbs) = 415 Ncm (42 inch lbs)

- Remove socket-head fastener.





- After selecting correct shim, install tapered roller bearing inner race (arrow in illustration) with locking compound AMV 185 100 01 A1.
- Installation position, refer to Final Drive Input Gear replacement. Service and Repair.
- Install axial needle bearing and tighten socket-head fastener with dished washer to 250 Nm (184 ft lb).

NOTE: Insert the axial needle bearing with its flat side facing the input gear before tightening the socket-head fastener.
