Condition

Low remote transmitter range (remote functions operate only within 5 feet or less).

Note:
Only on folding key transmitters.

Production

Improved transmitter beginning production 03.98 with VIN: 8DWA128920

Service

- Verify condition.

Install new remote transmitter antenna lead Part No: 8D1 971 650A from central locking control unit wiring harness connector (inside vehicle) to the outside of vehicle as follows:





- Completely remove right rear wheel house carpet to gain access to central locking control unit and wiring harness.

- Remove central locking control unit.

Note:
For proper removal of wiring terminals use connector test kit VAS 1978.





- Remove terminals from cavities 1 and 7 of antenna lead in connector -A- (arrow) of the central locking control unit (note which cavity the antenna shield wire is removed from).

- Insert new antenna shield wire (braided) into this cavity.

- Insert remaining antenna wire into other open cavity.

- Tape old antenna connector terminals back to wiring harness.





- Locate small rubber grommet in rear body panel -arrow-, pierce a hole just large enough to push antenna lead through to outside of vehicle.

- Reinstall remote locking control unit.

- Seal antenna lead where it passes through the grommet with small quantity of silicone sealant (RTV).





- Route antenna lead through grommet, along backside of bumper (attach to lower bumper cover tabs -arrow- using tie wraps as shown).

- Reinstall Wheelhouse carpet and trim.

- Quality check remote locking system.
