1/3 Backrest Section







1 - Locking lever
- Remove bolts -2- (2x) from lock trim -3-
- Detach locking lever from underneath at engaging hooks (2x).
- Using screwdriver, pry out locking lever at top.

- Outer rear head restraints are not identical to front head restraints. Mark accordingly using adhesive tape if all head restraints are removed together

- When backrest is locked in position, pin protrudes 1-2 mm (approx. 1/16 in.) above lock trim
- When backrest is not locked, pin protrudes approx. 20 mm (3/4 in.) above lock trim and red mark is visible
10 - Rear fastening strip (all around)
11 - Fastening strip for head restraint
12 - Fastening groove for head restraint
13 - Retaining tabs
14 - Lock cylinder
- Use ignition key when removing and installing lock cylinder
- Remove locking lever.
- Using screwdriver, pry out retaining tabs and press out lock cylinder -14-.

Removing:
- Remove backrest. Service and Repair
- Remove screws -2- (2x) from lock trim -3-.
- Press catch on left head restraint guide -6- and remove head restraint -4-.
- Remove head restraint guides -6-. See Fig. 2.
- Pry fastening strip -10- from backrest panel -5-.
- Using screwdriver, pry fastening strip -11- from fastening groove -12-.
- Cut through upholstery clips -7- and remove seat cover.
- Remove backrest heating element -8-.
Installing:
- Use VAG1634 stapling tool to install new upholstery clips.
- When installing new backrest panel, bend retaining tabs -13- inward approx. 1-2 mm (1/16 in.) to provide better support for fastening strip.

NOTES: Check the following after completing the installation of the backrest:
- The seat belt guide component and the belt webbing must not make contact with or rub against the seat foam or the seat cover fabric.
- The guide component must follow all movements of the belt webbing.
- The belt webbing must run freely in all directions.

3 - Screwdriver or upholstery needle Max. width 2 mm (25/32 in.)
4 - Hole

- Insert screwdriver or upholstery needle -3- (max. width 2 mm or 0.079 in.) into hole -4- (opposite retaining clip for head restraint guide).
- Pry screwdriver -3- in direction of arrow -A-, press retainer tab -2- in direction of arrow -B- and remove head restraint guide -1-.
