A/C System Changes as of 9/98
In the period from week 36 to week 44, 1998, there was a running change in production from the version 1 air conditioner system to the version 2 air conditioner system. You can differentiate between the two versions by noting specific characteristics. Characteristics of Air Conditioner Versions
NOTES:
- On vehicles with the 8 cyl. engine, only version 2 air conditioner systems are used.
- If components of the air conditioning system or the A/C control head -E87- are replaced, the information in the associated replacement parts catalog should also be considered. See parts catalog microfiche or contact your Audi dealer parts department.
The following components are different depending on the air conditioner system version:
A/C control head -E87-
With version 1 air conditioner systems, only A/C control heads with replacement part numbers up to index "G" can be or will be installed.
With version 2 air conditioner systems, only A/C control heads with replacement part numbers starting with index "P" can or will be installed.
Intermediate section for defrost duct
For version 1 air conditioner systems, a spacer with two openings for the air conditioner is installed.
For version 2 air conditioner systems, a spacer with one opening for the air conditioner is installed.
Defroster flap motor -V107-
The lifter arm on defroster flap motor -V107- is different in air conditioner versions 1 and 2.
Fresh air blower -V2-
The blower wheel for fresh air b1ower -V2- installed in the version 2 air conditioner is approx. 10 mm shorter than the one for version 1.
Air conditioner versions 1 and 2 differ in the following components and functions:
Air distributor housing
- Housing (version 1): the air is supplied to the intermediate section for defroster duct for version 1 through two openings.
- Housing (version 2): the two openings are combined to one opening.
Air distributor flaps in the air distributor housing
Position of the three air guide flaps to the instrument panel vents:
- Version 2: the two outer flaps remain open slightly when the center flap is closed (angle between the flaps is approximately 40 1|C), so some air can always flow to the left and right instrument panel vents.
- Version 1: all three flaps close completely.
Evaporator
- In version 2, the width of the evaporator is 32 mm less than in version 1 (58 instead of 90 mm). Also, the evaporator can no longer be removed from the air distributor housing (the housing would have to be disassembled because of the modified connection of the refrigerant lines).
- Refrigerant lines are adapted to the evaporator.
Air duct with intake housing
- The air duct is adapted to the modified fresh air blower.
- The blower wheel in the fresh air blower installed in the version 2 air-conditioned is approx. 10 mm shorter than the one for version 1.
- The air duct for version 2 is designed to be narrower in the area after the fresh air blower than the duct in version 1.
