Creaking Noise in Windshield Area

A6 Sedan 1998
Condition
Creaking noise from area above glove box at base of windshield near right A-pillar.
Note:
Usually occurs at ambient temperatures below 10° C (50° F).
Service
- Road test to confirm condition.
CAUTION!
Cooler temperatures may cause plastic plenum chamber cover to become brittle. Take care when removing and installing cover so damage does not occur.
- Carefully remove black plastic plenum chamber cover -1-.
- Loosen wiper arm nuts, but do not remove completely.
- Loosen wiper arms by rocking gently at base, then remove nuts completely and remove wiper arms.
- Remove cowl retainers (3x) -arrows-.
- Carefully remove cowl panel (lower windshield trim).
- Road test for noise again.
If noise is not eliminated:
- Contact your Audi Dealer Technicians Helpline.
If noise is eliminated, perform procedure as shown:
- Apply thin felt strips Part No: 533 867 91OA (qty. 2 required) along entire length of plenum chamber cover -1- where cover fits into groove -3- of cowl panel -2- (for further detail see illustration 85-A003).
- Apply thin felt strips Part No: 533 867 91OA (qty. 2 required) along entire length of cowl panel -2- at -arrow- (for further detail see illustration 85-A003).
CAUTION!
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Dept for the latest parts information.
Fold felt strip evenly over top and bottom edge of plenum chamber cover as shown.
- Apply felt to bottom edge of cowl panel.
- Trim felt as necessary so edges do not protrude beyond edge of cowl panel where panel meets windshield -A- or where panel will snap into windshield groove -B-.
- Reinstall cowl panel and retainers.
- Reinstall wiper arms.
Tightening torque: 16 Nm (144 in. lb)
- Apply felt to plastic tab at corner of fresh air intake -arrow-.
- Reinstall plenum chamber cover (requires extra effort and care due to added thickness of felt).
