Pinion and Ring Gear, Adjusting
GENERAL INFORMATION
Careful adjustment of the pinion and ring gear is essential for the service life and quiet operation of the final drive. For this reason, pinions and ring gears are paired during manufacturing and inspected in both directions of rotation on special test machines for good positioning of the bearing pattern and lack of noise. The position of quietest operation is determined by moving the pinion in an axial direction, while the ring gear is lifted continuously out of zero-play engagement until the torsional backlash is within the specified tolerance.
The deviation "R," related to the adjustment master "Ro," is measured for the ring gear and pinion sets supplied as replacement parts and inscribed on the outer circumference of the ring gear. The ring gear and pinion must only be replaced together as a set.
