Front Final Drive Housing Cover Gasket, Replacing

FRONT FINAL DRIVE HOUSING COVER GASKET, REPLACING

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items
^ VAG1383/A transmission jack
^ VAG1359/2 plate

Removing
- Remove front exhaust pipes.
- Remove heat shield.





- Remove bolts -1- to -14- on housing cover for front final drive.
- Place VAG1383A transmission jack together with 1359/2 plate in position.

CAUTION:
^ Remove the front final drive housing cover slowly and carefully. Otherwise, the front-wheel drive gears could fall out of the transmission.
^ If the front-wheel drive gears have fallen to the floor, they cannot be reinstalled The transmission has to be replaced

- Lift up housing cover or intermediate flange for front final drive.

NOTES:
^ Do not remove front gears for front final drive.
^ If the gears for the front final drive have been removed, the gear identification must face outward (away from the transmission) when they are installed

Installing





- Before installing, make sure dowel sleeve -A- is correctly located.
- Install gasket.
- Install housing cover on intermediate flange for front final drive.

CAUTION: All-wheel drive vehicles: the sealing lips of the oil seal can be damaged if the intermediate flange is not installed on the output shaft with sufficient care.





Tightening sequence:
^ Stage 1: tighten bolts -1-, -2- and -3- by hand.
^ Stage 2: tighten bolts -1- to -14- to specified torques in the sequence indicated.

Note: When tightening the bolts by hand (1st stage), make sure that the gap between the cover and the transmission housing decreases uniformly all the way around the cover.

- Fill with ATF, check ATF level and top up after repair.
- Install transfer gear (where applicable).
