Installation

NOTE: Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Many fasteners are designed to be used only once and become unreliable and may fail when used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, self-locking nuts or bolts, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow recommendations given in this publication. Always replace these fasteners with new parts.

The engine is installed in the reverse order of removal, with the addition of the following special conditions and steps:

CAUTION: To avoid corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals, all replacement fasteners should be genuine Audi parts with the special surface coating, recognizeable by its greenish color.

- Check hydraulic oil level and top off if necessary.
- Make sure that dowel sleeves for engine/transmission alignment are installed in cylinder block, install if necessary.
- Always replace self-locking nuts.
- Top off coolant, refer to cooling system.
- Align exhaust system free of stress, refer to Exhaust System.
- Check oil level before starting engine.
- Check automatic transmission fluid level.





- Install torque support free of stress; compensate with washers if, necessary.
- Shake engine to align engine mounts free of stress.
- Tighten fasteners as follows:
A/C compressor to bracket: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
A/C compressor bracket to engine: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Drive axles to flange shafts: 85 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
Engine support (right front) to engine: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
Engine support to body: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
Generator to engine:
8 mm bolts: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
10 mm bolts: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Exhaust manifold to cylinder head: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold: 40Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Hydraulic pump bracket to engine: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
Torque converter to drive plate: 35 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
Vibration damper to crankshaft:
Without special tool No. 2079, or equivalent: 450 Nm (332 ft. lbs.).
With special tool No. 2079, or equivalent: 350 Nm (258 ft. lbs.).
