Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection
The ATF level -3- is correct if, at an ATF temperature of 30 - 45°C (86 - 113°F) for normal temperature areas or for hot regions: 50°C (122°F), there is still a slight escape of fluid through the filler plug hole -2- (the oil rises when it is heated).
Test Requirements
- Transmission not in "mechanical backup" mode
- ATF temperature no higher than 401C (1041F) at start of testing
- Selector lever in "P" position
- Engine running at idle (closed throttle position)
- A/C and heat off
- Vehicle standing on level ground
NOTE:
^ Only ATF with the designation ESSO LT 71141 (color: clear yellow) can be added.
^ Additives cannot be used.
^ Checking the ATF level when the temperature is too low will lead to overfilling.
^ Checking the ATF level when the temperature is too high will lead to under-filling.
^ Overfilling or under-filling the ATF impairs the function of the transmission.
CAUTION: Part numbers are listed here for reference only. Always check with your parts supplier for the latest information.
CAUTION: Always wear safety glasses.
Procedure
- Hang filled ATF reservoir VAG 1924 as high as possible on vehicle (e.g. on radiator grille).
- Put selector lever in "P" position and run engine at idle (closed throttle position).
- Place drain pan under transmission oil pan to catch spilled fluid.
- The ATF temperature is measured using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) as follows:
- Connect VAG1551 scan tool. Testing and Inspection
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transmission" operating mode 1.
- Press buttons -0- and -2- to insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press arrow button.
- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press buttons -0-, -0- and -4- to input display group number 004.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Indicated on display.
The ATF temperature is indicated (in °C) in display field 1.
- Remove ATF filler plug -2-.
- The ATF level is OK if:
There is a slight escape of fluid through the filler plug hole -2- at an ATF temperature of:
30-45°C for normal temperature regions
50°C for hot regions:
- Install ATF filler plug -2-.
Tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
NOTE:
^ The ATF filler plug must be closed (at the latest), when the fluid reaches a temperature of 45C (for hot countries 501 C).
^ Always replace the O-ring for the ATF filler plug.
ATF Must Be Added If:
- ATF does not escape through the hole for the ATF filler plug -2-, even though the correct ATF temperature has been reached.
- Add ATF using filler nozzle from VAG 1924, until excess ATF escapes through hole for ATF filler plug -2-.
NOTE: The filler nozzle must be introduced into one of the openings of the oil scraper cap -4-, which is installed above the filler hole.
CAUTION:
^ Do not push the filler nozzle to the top.
^ Otherwise, the oil cap could spring off.
- Install ATF filler plug -2-.
Tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
- Press arrow button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
