Wheel Bearing Housing (Aluminum), Removing and Installing



Front Wheel Bearing Housing (Aluminum), Removing and Installing

Removing
^ Remove wheel trim; on light-alloy wheels, pull off trim cap (use puller in vehicle tool kit).
^ Unbolt hex bolt for drive axle.

WARNING! To reduce the risk of accident, loosen only when vehicle is standing on wheels.

^ Remove wheel.
^ Secure brake disc with a lug bolt.
^ Remove hex bolt -2-.
^ Pull ABS speed sensor wiring out of retainer on wheel bearing housing.





^ Remove bolts -1- for brake caliper and take off brake caliper.





^ Remove bolt -1- for ABS speed sensor.

Notes:
^ Suspend brake caliper from bodywork with a piece of wire.
^ Do not suspend the brake caliper from the brake hose.





^ Take off brake disc.
^ Remove nuts -2- and -3-.





^ Pullout rubber grommet -1- and separate connector -2-.
^ Pull ABS speed sensor wiring from retainers -arrows-.
Do not damage the rubber grommet!





^ Remove bolt with washer -3- and bolt -4-.

Notes:
^ Discontinuation of bolt with washer -3- at right tie rod, Refer to Wheel Bearing Housing (Steel), Removing and Installing.
^ Wheel alignment after carrying out repairs, Refer to Alignment, Description and Operation.

^ Pull out tie rod.
^ Remove nut from joint pin.

Note: For safety reasons, reinstall collar nut on track control link joint pin and tighten flush (approximately 4 turns).

^ Counter hold joint pin with 4 mm AF hex key if necessary.





^ Press guide link joint pin out of tapered seat.
Do not damage joint protective boot when doing this!

Notes:
^ For vehicles with headlight vertical aim control, Refer to Lighting and Horns.
^ For safety reasons, reinstall collar nut on track control link joint pin and tighten flush (approximately 4 turns).





^ Press track control link joint pin out of tapered seat.





^ Remove nut -1-, remove hex bolt and pull both links -2- out upward.
The slits in the wheel bearing housing must not be widened using a chisel or similar tool!
^ Swing wheel bearing housing in direction of arrow away to side, when doing this pull drive axle pin out from wheel hub.
^ Remove nut from track control link joint pin.
^ Take off wheel bearing housing.

Installing
^ Install wheel bearing housing.
^ Slide drive axle outer joint pin into wheel hub and tighten new hex bolt hand tight.
Any residual adhesive on threads of joint bolt should be removed.
^ Install joint pins for track control link and guide link into wheel bearing housing.
^ Install new self-locking nut and tighten to 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.).
Counter hold joint pin with 4 mm AF hex key if necessary.
^ Install both upper link joint pins into wheel bearing housing.
^ Install new self-locking nuts -1- and tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
^ When tightening, press upper link as far downward as possible.
^ Install tie rod.
^ Install new self-locking nut -4- and tighten to 4 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten hex bolt -3- to a maximum of 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
^ Install ABS speed sensor.

Note: For vehicles with headlight vertical aim control, Refer to Lighting and Horns.

^ Install cover plate and tighten to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
^ Install brake disc, bolt on brake caliper and tighten to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.).
^ Install wheel and tighten to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten drive axle hex bolt. To reduce the risk of accident, only tighten with vehicle standing on its wheels.
M16 hex bolt tightening torque: 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) plus additional 180° turn.

The alignment of the front suspension must be checked and if necessary adjusted using VW/Audi-approved wheel alignment equipment.
