Wheel Bearing Housing (Wheel Bearing Bolted In), Servicing
1 - Wheel bearing housing
^ Note different suspension versions
^ Allocation
^ Refer to Parts Supplier
2 - Tighten ball screws 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90 ° turn.
3 - Sockets

5 - Hex bolt, 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)

^ Pressing out, Refer to Fig. 1
^ Pressing bearing inner race off, Refer to Fig. 2
^ Stepped design
^ Wheel bearing/wheel hub contact surfaces and threaded holes must be free of paint and dirt
7 - Wheel bearing
^ Installation position:
^ Larger internal diameter of wheel bearing faces wheel hub
^ Pressing bearing inner race off, Refer to Fig. 2
Removing
^ Remove wheel trim. On light-alloy wheels, pull off trim cap using puller in vehicle tool kit.
^ Unbolt hex bolt for drive axle.
WARNING! To reduce the risk of accident, loosen only when vehicle is standing on wheels.
^ Remove wheel.
^ Secure brake disc with a lug bolt.
^ Remove hex bolt-2-.
^ Pull ABS speed sensor wiring out of retainer on wheel bearing housing.
^ Remove bolts -1- for brake caliper and take off brake caliper.
^ Remove bolt for ABS wheel speed sensor.
Notes:
^ Suspend brake caliper from bodywork with a piece of wire.
^ Do not suspend the brake caliper from the brake hose.
^ Take off brake disc.
^ Remove nut -1-, remove hex bolt and pull both links -2- out upward.
The slits in the wheel bearing housing must not be widened using a chisel or similar!
^ Swing wheel bearing housing in direction of arrow away to side, when doing this pull drive axle pin out from wheel hub.
^ Take off wheel bearing housing.
^ Remove ball screws -1-
^ Remove wheel bearing unit.

^ Insert separating tool in ring groove of bearing inner race (arrow) and pretighten with spindle.
Note: Use commercially available separating device e.g. Kukko 15-17.
^ Press bearing inner race off wheel hub.

^ When pressing in, thrust piece VW 511 may only rest on bearing inner race.
Installing
^ Tightening torque of ball screws -1-: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.) plus additional 90° turn.
^ Slide drive axle outer joint pin into wheel hub and tighten new hex bolt hand tight.
Any residual adhesive on threads of joint bolt should be removed.
^ Install both upper link joint pins into wheel bearing housing.
^ Install new self-locking nuts -1- and tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
^ When tightening press upper link as far downward as possible!
^ Install ABS speed sensor.
^ Install brake disc, bolt on brake caliper and tighten to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.).
^ Install wheel and tighten to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten drive axle hex bolt. Only tighten with vehicle standing on its wheels -danger of accident-.
Tightening torque (hex bolt): 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) plus additional 180° turn.
The alignment of the front suspension must be checked and if necessary adjusted using VW/Audi-approved wheel alignment equipment.
