Bearing Replacement


NOTE: The following special tools and testing equipment are necessary for this work:
^ VW 401 - Pressure plate
^ VW 402 - Pressure plate
^ VW 407 - Punch
^ VW 412 - Thrust disc
^ VW 415 A - Tu be
^ 32-109 - Driving sleeve

Removal
- Remove left drive flange.





- Remove circlip (arrow -A-) for ball bearing.





- Place left drive flange bracket on pressure plates VW 401 and VW 402 and press drive flange out of bracket using thrust disc VW 412.

CAUTION: Hold the drive flange with one hand to prevent it from falling.

- Remove impulse wheel for speedometer VSS -G22- from drive flange or bracket.





- Place bracket on pressure plates VW 401 and VW 402 and press ball bearing out of bracket using punch VW 407.

Installation





- Install impulse wheel for VSS -G22- (arrow) on drive flange and check installation position.

NOTE:
^ The drivers on the impulse wheel must engage in the groove of the drive flange.
^ If necessary, apply Vaseline to the contact surface of the impulse wheel in order to keep it in proper position during installation.





- Press new ball bearing into bracket as follows:
- Place bracket on pressure plates VW 401 and VW 402.
- Press bearing in using thrust disc VW 412 and driving sleeve 32-109.





- Press bracket (together with ball bearing) onto left drive flange as follows:
Place drive flange on pressure plate VW 401.
Press bracket on using thrust disc VW 412, tube VW 415 A and driving sleeve 32-109.

CAUTION: The press tube 2040 shown in the illustration should not be used (it is too short). Use tube VIS 415 A instead





- Install circlip (arrow -A-).
- Install left drive flange refer to Removing/Installing.
- Check final drive fluid level and correct as necessary.
- Tightening the following to:
Left drive flange bracket to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
Drive axle to drive flange M 10: 77 Nm (57 ft lb)
Drive axle to wheel hub M16 bolt (always replace): 200 Nm (148 ft lb) + 90°
Heat shield to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
