Removing/Installing
Removal
- Remove filler plug (arrow) from differential cover and remove approx. 0.5 liter (0.5 qt) of gear oil from final drive using suction device VAG 1358 A.
CAUTION:
^ Removing the gear oil will prevent the gear on from flowing into the ATF.
^ Otherwise, the hydraulic transmission control will be affected.
- Remove left-front wheel.
- Remove heat shield for left drive axle.
- Remove left drive axle.
- Remove speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G22-, refer to Powertrain Management.
- Remove bracket for connector from drive flange bracket.
- Remove bracket for left drive flange (arrows).
- Pull out left drive flange.
NOTE: If the transmission is installed, the left drive flange can be pulled out between the body and the subframe if the drive flange bracket is turned approx 60° to the right.
Installation
- Replace 0-ring (arrow -B-) for left drive flange bracket.
- Check shaft end (end with splines) of left drive flange for burrs and sharp edges and de-burr if necessary.
- Install left drive flange in transmission.
- Check final drive fluid level and correct as necessary.
- Tighten the following to:
Left drive flange bracket to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
Drive axle to drive flange M10: 77 Nm (57 ft lb)
Drive axle to wheel hub M16 bolt (always replace): 200 Nm (148 ft lb) +90 °
Heat shield to transmission: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
