Camshaft Drive Belt, Removal and Installation
Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt, removing and installing (engine installed)Removing
The battery is located in the luggage compartment, right side, under a cover.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the antitheft radio.
- Ignition switched off
- Disconnect battery ground strap.
- Remove noise insulation panel.
- Remove intake air grille from bumper, refer to Body and Frame, Front Grille, Service and Repair Service and Repair
- Attach drain hose, approx. 12 mm (1/2 in.) inside diameter, to drain fitting at bottom left of radiator.
- Drain coolant into clean container.
- Loosen ribbed belt.
Place box-end wrench on tensioner bracker and slowly push upward (arrow).
- Remove ribbed belt. Service and Repair
- Unbolt engine cover.
- Remove coolant hose clamp on right belt guard.
- Remove air intake duct between air cleaner and throttle body.
- Disconnect air shroud for viscous fan and electric coolant fan on radiator (upper-left).
- Remove from top and place to side of engine compartment.
Wiring remains connected.
- Disconnect viscous fan.
Counterhold with 3212 two-hole nut driver.
Note: The viscous fan has a left-hand thread; loosen by turning clockwise.
This step is shown with the engine out of the vehicle.
- Remove viscous fan with air shroud, from above.
- Remove engine support mount (right front).
- Remove coolant hoses at engine.
- Loosen coolant hose on upper-right of radiator, and turn hose to right.
- Loosen center bolt for vibration damper approx. 1 turn.
Counterhold using special tool 3197.
Note: This step is shown with the engine out of the vehicle.
Loosening and removing the vibration damper with the Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt sprocket is only necessary if the belt is to be replaced, or if other engine disassembly requires it.
When the center bolt has been loosened, it must be replaced
- Rotate crankshaft to align TDC marks on vibration damper.
Note: If the center bolt for the vibration damper has been loosened, use special wrench 3197 to turn the crankshaft.
- Remove Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor housing at rear of left cylinder head.
If camshaft position sensor is not positioned behind sensor plate window, rotate crankshaft 360°.
- Remove camshaft flange at rear of right cylinder head.
- Disconnect harness connector from switch for intake manifold changeover valve -N 156-.
- Remove belt guard.
- Unclip cap at guide pulley for ribbed belt at right belt guard.
- Remove top part of air cleaner housing.
- Remove right belt guard mounting bolts (6x).
- Carefully lift right belt guard up and out.
- Hold camshaft sprocket with holder 3036.
- Loosen camshaft sprockets bolts.
On left cylinder head:
- Remove Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor plate -A- (bolt -B-) and housing (arrows).
- Install camshaft locking device 3341 at rear of each cylinder head, and tighten.
If necessary, rotate camshaft slightly to allow locking device to engage.
CAUTION: The camshaft locking devices 3341 are not to be used as counterholds when loosening or tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts.
To rotate camshaft slightly:
- Remove cylinder head cover and turn camshaft using wrench on hex-shaped end (arrow) of intake camshaft.
If Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt or belt sprocket is not loose:
- Turn camshaft using holder 3036 (do not turn using sprocket mounting bolt).
- Using two-hole nut turner, e.g. Matra V/159, loosen eccentric tensioning roller and turn to lowest point.
- Compress Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt damper by hand and remove tensioning roller.
CAUTION: Mark the running direction of the belt with a felt pen or equivalent. Reversed running direction can lead to damage.
- Remove belt from camshaft sprockets.
- Lightly strike edge of camshaft sprockets with plastic hammer to loosen from tapered ends of camshafts.
- Remove 4 screws fastening vibration damper to drive belt sprocket, remove center bolt, and remove vibration damper.
Do not pull sprocket off crankshaft.
- Remove Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt.
Installing and adjusting tension
- Place belt over crankshaft sprocket and install vibration damper on crankshaft.
- By hand, screw in 4 bolts that connect vibration damper to sprocket.
- Lightly oil thread and bolt contact surfaces of center bolt.
- Thread in new center bolt and tighten by hand.
Counterhold with special tool 3197.
Note: Always replace center bolt.
- Install each camshaft sprocket loosely on taper of camshaft, with mounting bolts remaining loose by approx. 1 turn.
- Place belt in position over all sprockets, guide pulleys and water pump pulley. Belt routing, refer to Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt, Assembly Overview Camshaft Drive Belt, Assembly Overview
- Push belt over tensioning roller with eccentric insert and tighten nut (arrow).
Eccentric insert must still be able to turn.
- Tighten 4 mounting bolts connecting vibration damper and crankshaft sprocket.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
To set the basic adjustment of belt tensioner:
Turn eccentric insert of tensioning roller clockwise using commercial two-hole nut turner (e.g. Matra V/159).
- Adjust position of tensioning roller until damper length -a- is within specified range.
Damper length -a-
Engine cold 136-139 mm (5.35-5.47 in)
Engine warm 126-129 mm (4.96-5.08 in)
- Tighten tensioning roller.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18ft lb)
- Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts. Use holder 3036.
Tightening torque: 55 Nm (41 ft lb)
- Remove camshaft locking device from each camshaft (rear of cylinder head)
- Install housing behind camshaft position sensor (arrows).
Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
Camshaft position sensor plate - A- must engage in camshaft with catch
- Crank engine at least two revolutions.
- Tighten crankshaft center bolt.
Always replace
Install with locking compound AMV 00102
Lightly oil threads and contact surfaces
Counterhold with special tool 3197
Tightening torque
With special tool 2079 350 Nm (258 ft lb)
Without special tool 2079 450 Nm (332 ft lb)
- Check damper length and if necessary, adjust tensioning roller.
Note: The remaining installation of the Camshaft Drive(timing belt)Belt is the reverse of removal.
