Connecting Scan Tool



VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), connecting and entering address word

Note: The VAG1552 scan tool can be used instead of the VAG1551 scan tool, however VAG 1552 does not have printing capability.

Connecting (m.y. 1997 >)





- Unclip cover for Data Link Connector (DLC) located under driver's side knee bar, behind steering wheel (left side).
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool to DLC using VAG 1551/3 adapter cable.

Notes:
- If there is no display, test the power supply at the data link connector socket, Refer to Diagrams/Diagnostic Aids.
- The "PRINT" button is used for switching on the printer (the indicator lamp in the button comes on).

Notes: Additional operating information can be printed out by pressing the "HELP" button on the VAG 1551 scan tool.

- Switch ignition on.
- Press "PRINT" button to switch printer on; indicator lamp in button comes on.
- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.

Note: The address word selects the control module of the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system that you wish to test using the scan tool. It is made up of two digits, which are listed in the relevant sections.

- Press buttons -0- and -3- to insert "Brake Electronics" address word 03.

Note: If a malfunction occurs when establishing communication between the VAG1551 scan tool and the control module, refer to the four displays and instructions that follow.





If "Control module does not answer" is displayed,
or





"K wire not switching to Ground" is displayed:
A list of the possible causes can be printed out by pressing the "HELP" button.





If "No signal from control module" is displayed:
- Test cable connections for data link connector wires -L- and -K-, Refer to Diagrams/Diagnostic Aids.
- Test power supply and Ground (GND) connection for ABS control module -J104- , Refer to Diagrams/Diagnostic Aids.





If "Error in communication link" is displayed:
- Repair malfunction , Refer to Diagrams/Diagnostic Aids.
- After repairing malfunction, once again insert "Brake Electronics" address word 03 and press -Q- button to confirm.





If the data link between the scan tool and the control module is established and works properly, the display will now show the control module identification (X), the system designation (Y), the hardware and software versions (Z), the coding (V) and the dealership number (W).

Notes:
- The -> button is used for advancing through the program sequence.
- The various On Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems to be tested are described in more detail in the relevant sections.
- The control module index can only be changed by replacing the control module.
- If the control module identification number does not appear in the display, check the diagnostic wiring.

- Press -4 button.
