Pinion Gear
REMOVAL/INSTALLATIONNOTE: The pinion can only be removed after removing the differential.
1. Transmission housing
2. Pinion
- Matched to ring gear
- If damaged, replace pinion and ring gear as a set
- Number of teeth, refer to CODE LETTERS, ENGINE/TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS, RATIOS AND EQUIPMENT. Application and ID
- Installing, refer to Fig. 1, below.
- Adjusting, refer to Ring, Pinion and Input Gear. Adjustments
3. Tapered roller bearing inner race
- Removing, refer to Fig. 2, below.
- Pressing on, refer to Fig. 3, below.
4. Tapered roller bearing outer race
- Drive out using drift
- Installing, refer to Fig. 4, below.
5. Shim "S3"
- Determining thickness, refer to page Ring, Pinion and Input Gear. Adjustments
6. Pinion bushing
- Remove with tapered roller bearing outer race, refer to Fig. 2, below
- Pressing on, refer to Fig. 3, below.
7. Pinion oil seal
- Always replace
- Remove with screwdriver
- Driving in, refer to Fig. 5, below.
8. Parking lock gear
- Rounded side faces toward input gear
9. Input gear/pinion
- Number of teeth, refer to CODE LETTERS, ENGINE/TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS, RATIOS AND EQUIPMENT. Application and ID
- Raised shoulder faces toward parking lock gear
- Removing, refer to Fig. 6, below.
10. Shim "S4"
- Determining thickness, refer to Ring, Pinion and Input Gear. Adjustments
11. Spacer
- Wider contact surface faces toward input gear
12. O-ring
- Always replace
13. Pinion cover
14. Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
15. Tapered roller bearing outer race
- Drive out using drift
- Driving in, refer to Fig. 7, below.
16. Tapered roller bearing inner race
17. Nut
- Secure after measuring pinion turning torque and adjusting pinion, refer to Fig. 8, below.
- Adjusting pinion, refer to Ring, Pinion and Input Gear. Adjustments
- Engage parking lock to remove or install
18. End cover
- Removing, refer to Fig. 9, below.
- Installing, refer to Fig. 10, below.

- Use assembly sleeve (A in illustration, special tool 3187) to install the pinion and prevent damage to the sealing lips.

- Drive sealing ring into stop.
