Replacement
REMOVALWARNING:
^ Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use.
^ Some fasteners are designed to be used only once, and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and coffer pins. Always follow the recommendations in this manual-replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated, and any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting the battery, determine the correct coding for the anti-theft radio.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Remove intake air silencer:
- Disconnect vacuum hoses (No. 1 and 2 in illustration).
- Remove intake air duct (No. 3 in illustration) and mounting bolts (arrows).
- Remove intake air silencer (No. 4 in illustration).
Vehicles With Split ATF Filler Tube
- Disconnect upper filler tube at top and remove.
- Cover lower pipe opening with clean, lint-free rag.
All Vehicles
- Remove upper bolts connecting engine and transmission.
- Lift upward on coolant hoses.
- Remove engine cover and mounting brackets.
- Attach engine support bridge to left engine lifting lug.
- Adjust engine support slightly to take up weight of engine.
- Remove drive axle heat shields.
- Remove crossmember below three way catalytic converters, then remove exhaust pipes complete with converters.
- Disconnect drive axles from transmission.
- Remove starter.
- Place oil drain pan below ATE cooler line connections.
- Disconnect ATF cooler line connections (A in illustration).
- Remove bracket (B in illustration) and push lines to side.
- Disconnect torque convertor from driveplate (3 nuts).
NOTE: Counter-hold the center bolt of the vibration damper in order to loosen the nuts for the torque converter.
- Disconnect harness connector for speedometer vehicle speed sensor at differential cover.
- Remove heat shield for multi-function transmission range switch.
- Disconnect harness connectors (No.s 1, 2 and 3 in illustration).
- Release seat belt tensioning system cable supports and press cables upward.
- Remove transmission vehicle speed sensor (short cable, at left rear of transmission).
- Set up transmission support 3282.
NOTE:
^ If transmission support 3282 is not available, the transmission can be removed and installed using transmission jack VAG1383A, or equivalent
^ Use adjustment plate 3282/3 for the 01N transmission.
^ The symbols on adjustment plate 3282/3 indicate the support points required for removing both the 097 and 01N transmissions.
- Push VAG1383A jack with transmission support 3282 under transmission, then adjust to take up weight of transmission.
- Secure transmission using support 3282 (arrow).
- Remove hex-head bolt (arrow) from bonded rubber rear transmission mount.
- Remove lower bolts connecting engine and transmission.
- Press transmission away from engine and lower carefully.
NOTE: Carefully press torque converter off drive plate when removing transmission.
- Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling.
INSTALLATION
The transmission is installed in the reverse order of removal.
- Make sure engine/transmission dowel sleeves are properly installed.
- Check selector lever cable, and adjust cable if necessary refer to Shift Linkage A/T. Service and Repair
- Check ATF level.
- Tightening torques:
Drive axle to drive flange: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
Torque converter to drive plate: 85 Nm (63 ft lb)
Transmission to engine:
12 mm bolts: 65 Nm (48 ft lb)
10 mm bolts: 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
Starter to transmission: 65 Nm (48 ft lb)
Transmission mount to transmission: 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
Transmission mount to body: 110 Nm (82 ft lb)
