Cigarette Lighter Door, Stuck in Closed Position

Condition
Cigarette lighter element interferes with cigarette lighter assembly which may cause the lighter door to stick in the closed position.
Service
- Remove locking pin -3- downward.
- Remove trim -1- in direction of arrow.
- Remove trim -2-.
- Unclip cover -3-.
- Remove bolts -2- torque = 5 Nm (44 in. lb).
- Open ashtray cover -5- and lift ashtray up and out.
- Remove nut -6- torque = 10 Nm (7 ft lb) vehicles without armrest.
- Vehicles with armrest remove 3 nuts holding armrest bracket.
- Pull up parking brake lever, lift rear center console -1- slightly and detach from front center console at front.
- Lift rear center console -1- toward front over parking brake lever and remove.
Remove cigarette lighter assembly from center console as follows.
- Remove two bolts -1- holding lighter assembly to console. torque = 1.5 Nm (13 in. lb).
- Remove lighter assembly from console.
Remove lighter element as follows:
- Turn assembly over and using trim removal wedge (tool No.3409), push lighter element in until door opens.
- Remove lighter element.
- Close lighter door.
- Turn assembly over.
From the bottom side of assembly.
- Remove the center three ribs -black arrows- from lighter assembly using a Dremel(R) tool (or similar). DO NOT, remove two outer ribs -white arrows-!
- Also carefully remove raised edge of material along the three inner ribs.
Illustration shows 3 inner ribs removed.
CAUTION!
DO NOT remove the two outer ribs!
- Insert lighter element into socket and check clearance.
- Close lighter door.
- Pull lighter element out until it contacts the area where material was removed -arrow-.
- Operate lighter door several times and ensure that element does not keep door from opening.
- Install lighter element correctly.
- Install lighter assembly into console.
- Install console in reverse order of removal.
